NASA's Earth Observatory inspires a couple of different views this week. First of all, there's this:
Fogo, Cape Verde Islands
which in part notes that there are villages inside the caldera which holds the volcanic peak of Fogo (actually Pico do Fogo, if you're wondering why it's labeled Pico in the picture). I wouldn't think that's exactly prime real estate! In the picture below you can see the villages as small white dots, and the road to them through the caldera. The other images are a few I found that the two villages from various perspectives.
View from the 1995 eruption crater; the buildings of the Portela village are visible under the caldera rim
View from Bangaeira (they don't like linking)
Then there's this:
Saint Helena Island
Saint Helena Island is a British Overseas Territory, very remote, still only reachable by ship, most famous as being the final place of exile for Napoleon I, after Elba didn't work. A couple of shots below show Jamestown in one of the deep ravines, and the harbor. At least they have recreational facilities!
Finally, there's this:
and this:
from here, which has some additional stunning photographs: Anak Krakatau, June 2009
No one lives permanently on the islands around Anak Krakatau, the rim of the Krakatoa caldera that is above the ocean waters, which are now a nature reserve. Seems like a good idea to me. But a LOT of people live on Sumatra and Java.
The ISS was in PRIME position to get the mind-blowing shot below. Click for full-size.
Awesome, as usual. thanks cogitator. I don’t know if I’d like to live there, though.
Stunningly AWESOME!
Thank you for posting them.
We’re all looking at them.
The ISS photo is spectacular...and it’s my new computer wallpaper.
i’m really interested in geology, esp. volcanoes. thanks.
I wonder what they say at Allstate when someone calls and asks about LAVA COVERAGE??
It’s probably like $603,000.00 a year!
BTTT
WOW.
STUNNING pics.
thanks.

Zowie!
Well put!
I saw the great tv show in this yesterday...Discovery Channel?
Fascinating stuff!!! Great pictures!!!
Amazing photo!
It was pointed out to me that I didn’t ping the list for this Geology Picture of the Week. Consider yourself pinged belatedly.
Can’t figure a valid reason for perfect circular “hole” in the rising air (and humidity) around the volcano: Seems that it would be the opposite: more clouds right near it.
I sailed through the Sunda Strait and past Anak Krakatau in 1992 or ‘93 while enroute from Singapore to Perth but it was quiet at the time, just some steam. Still cool to see.
