Just as astronomers were telling the world that they figured out what gave Jupiter a black eye last July, yet another cosmic impact left a mark on the giant planet today. And this time, it was caught on video.
Actually, two of the world's best-known amateur observers of Jupiter both saw the flash of impact at 20:31 GMT today (4:31 p.m. ET). In Australia, Anthony Wesley captured a picture of the hit just before sunrise Friday (Down Under time). And in the Philippines, Christopher Go turned his pictures into a short video that was posted on SpaceWeather.com.
"I still can't believe that I caught a live impact on Jupiter," SpaceWeather quoted Go as saying.
It's not known exactly what caused the impact, but whether it was an asteroid or a comet, it's likely to have left a mark on Jupiter's cloud tops. So the call has gone out for all astronomers, professional and amateur, to monitor Jupiter in the hours ahead.

Jove, you magnificent bastard!
wow
A year ago astronomers tell us Pluto is not a planet. This week Ford tells us Mercury will soon be gone. And now this! Obama is bad for the solar system.
At first I thought it was a loogie on my laptop screen but it wasn’t. So OK.
Sorry! My bad. The youngest daughter is training for her driver’s license and didn’t look over her shoulder.
Well Obama sure is a pain in Uranus.
This must have to do with those critters on Jupiter using internal combustion engines, probably SUV’s, the bastidges! Somebody tell The Messiah! Cut off their highway funds and food stamps!
“Oops, I got eye lint on my lens. Never mind”.
I have always wondered what it’s like when these objects strike the gaseous planets. What’s the consistency or density of these things? Is there a big ripple, like a tidal wave, and can that ripple be detected? Or, does the planetary mass just absorb the impact, like dropping a rock in a big tub of pudding?
This just proves that we need a relief program for the planets and they should be brought under the control of Obummer.
“Somethings going to happen...”
“what is going to happen?”
“Something Wonderful...”
Catastrophism maybe?
Ooops! I thought we were talking about Venus...
Not sure if it means anything, but it was reported that radio telescopes picked up a signal that translated to: "WOOP WOOP Terrain, Terrain, WOOP WOOP Terrain...." /s
If that’s all I had to drink, I’d be screaming too.
Due to the distance to Jupiter, this happened a LONG time ago, BTW.
Jupiter is only one light hour from the sun (~660+ million miles). I takes a radio signal about an hour to get to Jupiter from earth. We see events on Jupiter about 1 hour after they have happened. That's not so long.
Well, a back-of-the-envelope calculation says 660 million miles is about 660 thousand time zones which is about 75 years. That is a fairly long time, although I don’t know which side of the dateline they’re on, so they may actually be ahead of us.
