After two strong earthquakes hit in California last week, there was a spike in internet searches for Yellowstone caldera and Yellowstone volcano. The quakesa magnitude 6.4 and 7.1 on July 4and 5 respectivelyhad apparently raised fears an eruption at the supervolcano could be triggered by these events. Related search terms, according to Google Trends, included "California earthquake" and "the big one California."
But these fears are completely unfounded, the USGS has said. In an article on the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory website, scientist-in-charge Mike Poland has explained what impact earthquakes have on volcanic activityand why the quakes in California will not cause Yellowstone to erupt.
He said that strong earthquakes are not a rare occurrence for the western U.S. The region is covered in fault linesan interactive map of them can be found here. Fault lines are cracks in the Earth's crust that have the potential to trigger earthquakes when they move around.
"Since 1900, in the continental U.S. there have nearly 100 earthquakes greater than M6, and there have been nine greater than M7 (both of these numbers go up if you include Canada and Mexico)," Poland wrote. "Most of these events are in California, but they have also occurred in Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. If we assume that rate is representative of the average, that means there would be about 10 M7+ events per century in the western USA."
It has been 70,000 years since Yellowstone last erupted. Over this time, there may have been over 7,000 strong earthquakesnone of which have led to an eruption at Yellowstone. Poland also said that the distance of the earthquake to Yellowstone does not matterin 1959 a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit on the Montana-Idaho border, on the boundary of the National Park, but there was still no eruption.

The track of the Yellowstone Hot Spot is across the Pacific NW, NOT southern California. Makes no difference. These earthquakes are caused by global climate change warming and cooling and are Trump’s fault.
Anyone else get hairs that stand up on the back of your neck when you hear someone from the government say “No need to worry, trust me.”
Newsweek is now doing articles based on alleged Google searches?
Why worry about something that you have no control over? We do not posses the technology to start or even stop a caldera volcano event.
Kind of like our sun going supernova or red giant. Nothing I can do about it and if it happens in my life time ... I am dead. Worrying about it will only shorten my lifespan.
Ultimately it is called “risk acceptance”. There are only three possibilities with risk. You can take actions to mitigate a risk (wearing a helmet while ridding a bike), you can transfer risk (medical insurance should you fall of the bicycle) and anything not mitigated or transferred is automatically accepted (bicycle getting a flat tire)
Global warming is a total Hoax!
It’s a made up problem to provide a revenue stream to ignorant people!
Winter, Spring, Summer Fall.
What you see is what you get!
Correct. We are all dead in the long run. Why worry about dying unless you arent Saved?
If it wasn’t for global warming, Chicago would still be under a mile of ice.
If Yellowstone erupts, the worst that Scientist Poland faces is losing his job. If he puts out a statement which causes panic and results in real estate prices around Yellowstone collapsing, and other economic dislocations, he faces the CERTAINTY of losing his job.
This is why, while he may be right, we cannot trust his opinions.
I'm not so sure. A terrorist event or attack from another country capable of delivering a nuclear warhead into the caldera would not set it off. Just speculating...
Remember that this is a guy who thinks that micro-quakes at shallow depths are indications of pressures being transferred as great depth. And that drill holes perforate tectonic plates.
He seems to be of the opinion that shallow quakes caused (allegedly) by fracking are the equivalent of deep quakes indicative of tectonic pale movement.
Is he right? I don’t know. Gotta say I doubt it, though.
Then I want the left coast to go, not Yellowstone!
Thar she blows!
