Treasure hunters search for fabled gold on Philippines island. Hoard may not even exist.

The treasure hunt threatens to cause landslides.

Excavations by treasure hunters searching for a hoard of gold in the Philippines, said to have been hidden by a Japanese World War II general, are threatening to cause landslides in a remote village.

The search for fabled buried treasure is inspired by centuries-old Filipino folktales, according to an anthropologist. The treasure seems to be just that — a fable — as historians say it probably doesn't even exist.

"People [are] spending a lot of money and a lot of time and effort looking for stuff that is probably not there," said Piers Kelly, a linguistic anthropologist at the University of New England in Armidale, Australia.

In the latest development, people in the Igbaras district on the island of Panay have asked officials to put a stop to excavations that they say could cause landslides, according to the official Philippine News Agency.

The villagers say the excavations by 10 men have gone on for more than a year near their village, in a fenced-off area that's about 10,800 square feet (1,000 square meters).

But according to local officials, the treasure hunters say that national authorities in Manila gave them permission to dig, and that they will continue their excavations, Panay News reported. The treasure hunters also turned away local police from the excavation site.

I’ve seen some “B” movies that use hidden WW 2 Filipino gold as the basis for a plot line.

The films may have paid some bills for a number of people, but I doubt in any amount akin to “treasure”.

After every war, it seems, there is a 'hidden gold' story. Lost Confederate gold. Lost Spanish gold. Lost German gold. Lost Vietnamese gold..............It actually wasn't lost, it was in Nguyễn Văn Thiệu's garage...................

Filipino version of Oak Island .......
My first thought too. Why would anyone watch the Oak Island show knowing nothing has ever been found there?
Makes no sense to me.

True. IIRC, the pilot of the original Magnum PI had WW 2 gold as the driving plot line.

The one common factor, besides the ‘war’, is it’s NEVER found.

And no one ever proves that it ever actually existed in the first place...............

Centuries old fable? An anthropologist? They are looking for a stash said to have been hidden by the Japanese during WWII. Last I checked WWII didn’t happen centuries ago.

We used to watch that show.

Was visiting Mom last week and we saw it on tv and decided to watch.

Incredibly cheesy!

But then again there was no anti-Americanism, leftism, anti White racism, nihilism or longing for the communist revolution.

And the 2 genders were clearly identifiable.

Yeah, it was corny but remember when tv was entertainment?

There already has been enormous Yamashita gold finds in the Philippines.

I don’t care if they find any treasure on Oak Island. The show is a really good historic dig open to the public to watch, unlike if a university or government does it.

I haven’t watched it since the first season. It’s stupid. And that announcer...”Dirt? Deep in the ground?” “Rocks? In the ground?”
