Last year, I spent six days in Helsinki. I have to admit, it’s a bit different than most European cities. But it has three big advantages. First, it’s absolutely safe throughout the whole city. You just won’t find anything to worry you. Second, public transportation is probably among the best in the world. Third, locals are exceptionally friendly. But avoid in the midst of winter.
One of my faves.
I saw them back in the 80s and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Thy do put on a good show.
I guess you’ll dance to anything by Depeche Mode

I love 80’s music. Born in the 50’s, so I didn’t grow up to it, but it was actually fun, unlike later music. Echo&Bunnymen, P-Furs, pre-Michael-Stipe-turned-douche REM, New Order, Stranglers, so many many more.
One of the best concerts I ever saw was English Beat with REM as the opener.
Here’s a great paean to it

Took that ferry in 1990, just before USSR fell. Saw many Estonian flags flying, it was obvious things were about to fall apart.
Immediately afterwards went to a conference in Siberia - in early July - on the fourth the Russians brought out a cake with sparklers blazing - honoring our freedom and theirs that was to come.
Good times.
The 80’s were amazing - Reagan, Thatcher, JPII, dollar strong, and MTV actually played music!
Echo and the Bunnymen and New Order are excellent. I got to see New Order in 2012. Hadn’t been to a concert in years. It was such fun. And I was big into the Psychedelic Furs in the 80s.
I love this one I discovered by Echo and the Bunnymen just last year...song from 1999, but new to me:

U2 came in at #1 with $316MM, followed by Guns N' Roses, ($292.5MM), Coldplay ($238MM), Bruno Mars ($200.1MM), and Metallica ($152.8MM).
DM's haul of $141.1MM bested 7th place Paul McCartney's $132MM though Macca played fewer shows and charged almost twice per ticket on average.
As for anyone who declares that today's music sucks, I would ask: when was the last time you listened to a contemporary music channel on the radio like Underground Garage on XM or LEFT YOUR HOME and went to a local bar and paid $10 to see 6 unsigned bands? Yea most of them will suck, but you WILL see some good talent and if you can part with $15 for a shirt and CD you'd be engaging in the destructive waves of capitalism. Othwerise we are doomed to Lady Gaga being piped over the sound system of your local grocery store in 10 years.
They’ve always had very loyal fans, so I guess I’m not surprised.
I was a big fan of Joy Division, thought New Order were a bit arty but being the remnants of Joy Division I couldn’t help but love them, and hearing them play “Everything’s Gone Green” live at full wail was one of my more memorable concert experiences. Do not ask for whom the bell tolls, lol. Chemical assistance.
New Order - Substance 1987 (Disc One)
There is a type of music out there today that is insidious and prevalent. It appeals to pre-teen and teen girls, I guess. I don’t even know what genre it would be called. It’s so awful I don’t think it has genre. It is ubiquitous, though. I hear it at the gym. In restaurants. In stores. There’s no escaping it. (I don’t want to put any on this thread as this music to follow are things I enjoy.)
Still there are people out there, IMO, that are putting out new and interesting things. Things that one can sing to. Things with original lyrics. People that are actually playing instruments.
I don’t know any “new” band too extensively, but I have things from the 2000s+ that I definitely like. Save for one or two below, most of these musicians below have several offerings that I enjoy.
New Slang by The Shins (2001):

For intensity and feeling, I’d put this up there with Depeche Mode.
And this one by them is frickin’ brilliant:
Man of War (1997 and 2017)

Same with this:
I Promise (1997)

Anyway, I could go on for **way too long**. I think I already did. ;)
Saw Death Cab For Cutie live a few years ago, lying on the grass outdoors on a warm early summer night at the Koka Booth Ampitheatre in Cary, NC. Underrated band.
Speaking of Koka Booth Ampitheatre, it’s a bit of a schlep from CO but Vance Joy will be in concert there May 12.
Very nice. I really enjoy the things I have heard by them. They have been here to CO a few times in the last several years, but I just don’t have the dedication to go see too many things live like I used to MANY years ago. I wish I did. I bet they are very good live.
lol...If I had plenty of dough, I’d be schlepping all over. Gotta start playing the powerball. ;)
It was very comfortable and casual, the amphitheatre has outdoor bars and restaurants in a building discretely behind, the entire complex is in the middle of a longleaf pine and live oak forest. Find that comfortable venue out your way and go, there were folks at that outdoor concert who had to be in their 80’s up and jamming in the crowd. No need to isolate yourself from it.
I love a lot of different eras and genres of music but my musical home is in the 90’s myself. People didn’t understand them in their heyday but I find Sonic Youth to be an awesome band with amazing depth, sort of referential to Velvet Underground if you go back that far with your musical interests.
Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea
There are lots of good, current bands out there. One just has to look past the junk.
“Enjoy the silence” is a musical gem.
Ok.. Who can post the YouTube video of “Enjoy The Silence” recorded atop The WTC?
I love Zep and Guns too, but my favorite is METALLICA!
Play this one for your wife next time she is in the car and see if she can dig some music made for men by men.
Blackened- Metallica

If she recovers from that one, ease her down with this one.
Orion- Metallica

Will do :)
Saw them with, I think, 4 other bands in the 80s.
I’ve seen them, but one monster concert comes to mind.
Don’t know if they ever did those multi band concerts or i’m still hallucinating from the wafts of pot my friends smoked that night lol
