Not at all - I use it there all the time. I guess we are too small to bother with. :)

Blocking VPN’s. Something Red China and Cone Hospital in Greensboro NC have in common. Annoying.

Be careful. I’ve known several folks who have picked up computer spyware while in China.

More responsive to your question - FR generally doesn’t interact with Chinese activists. There is an occasional story about religious freedom issues there, but almost nothing that could be taken as an effort to stir up trouble within China. This site is not a threat to the Chinese government, and it apparently recognizes that fact.

FR is not something Chinese people would find threatening. We focus mostly on American politics and we are usually critical of it.

It is my recollection that FR is blocked on the Essex County Courthouse (Newark, NJ) Wi-Fi available to prospective jurors. (Ha-ha! I turned off their Wi-Fi and used 4G, and had no problem after that.)

ML/NJ

“I’m pretty sure its not blocked in Hong Kong”

Although this could change depending on the whims of Mainland China, for now Hong Kong has free and open internet. Google, FR and everything else works just fine there.

It’s an amazing experience to spend a day in Hong Kong after traveling around Mainland China. The energy and vitality of a free society is overwhelming after spending time in a country under totalitarian control.

Laz was all over that guy.

Personally, I think he just innocently wanted a recipe for tuna casserole.

And information on unusual activity near military installations.

Not only is SCMP blocked, but you can’t even get to it with VPN. They must be desperate to keep people from reading it. Which is funny, because SCMP has a noticeably ‘friendly’ slant to it, which is opposite of what one would expect.

If you’re planning to stay a while, the are lots of companies that run VPN services to get around the great firewall of China.
