we changed our # also, after getting a slew of Indian accented gentlemen calling our home. Now we get calls for the people that had our new #, they have trouble with CC collectors. I just pick up and hang up after 1 ring, and then block the #.
[ Actually, they are from Pakistan. If I have a few free minutes, I will play along with them for as long as I think I can.
Then burst their bubble. I will use every terrible word I can think of.
I also looked up Pakistani insults on the internet. They especially hate it when you ask if their mommies and daddies let them out of the house to steal from people. They also hate when you make fun of their caste.
I got into an insult trading match with one for nearly an hour. (Rachel would not be pleased!). And after a while, he gave up details of their scam. But it is as bad as you would suspect.
These are all the call center guys from 10 years ago - before that work got passed over to the Philippines. There are rooms full of them. They have nothing else to do. They que up as computer makes the calls. A connected call gets passed to them, hence the pause. This is all done thru the internet, not the phone lines so no charge to them.
They try to get credit card info and immediately pass good data to people in the US to make purchases or create dummy duplicate cards.
No remorse, they are proud of their stealing. It will never end until technology catches up to them. ]
We can raid BinLaden’s compound but we cannot drop a few MOABS on their call center.... SAD....
Let me guess... lots of phone calls from Bayonne, NJ 201-215-1xxx?
It’s a new megaspammer just come on line.
I kept a phone number from a different Area Code, where I only have 2 or 3 people who should legitimately call me.
Any other calls from that Area Code, I just refuse to answer. I swipe left to kill the call.
You may wish to get a number from a different Area Code so spoofs never work.
On my cell phones, “Mr Number” works fairly well and on my land line “NOMOROBO” is fantastic.
Both services require people to report bogus calls which are added to their Blocked database.
With NOMOROBO, all I hear is a single ring, and BOOM the call is deleted.

No, but they are all from my area code and exchange....
If your number is 555-555-1212 they will call you “from” 555-555-XXXX
It is part of the dialer program they use that does the call spoofing
I ask the caller if they have heard of the NSA? I explain that the NSA does keyword searches for certain words such as ‘nuclear weapons, chemical warfare, weapons of mass destruction, terrorist attack and Hillary is guilty’. I tell them have a nice visit with the government. I hope the NSA will track them with these words! That’s all can do to help the government since the no call list is a joke.
[ Cell phone: I use Norton Mobile Security & it has a call blocker - I use the option to block everything that isnt in my contact list. If you are expecting calls from people not in your contact list, then this option wont work for you. This does not keep the caller from leaving a voice mail - usually the scammers hang up so anyone who knows you or has business with you could leave a message and youd still get it. So far, Norton has worked better than other apps Ive tried. ]
I will install that app later today!!! THANK YOU FOR THE TIP!
A massive misappropriation of power? You mean like spying on a presidential campaign? You mean like sweeping up all the domestic phone calls and emails and saving them illegally, but claiming they haven’t technically broken the law until they look at one specific call? Like lying to congressional oversight on TV?
When we want them to do something on our behalf finally... Then they suddenly grow a conscience.
good ideas,
Here is what cut down 90% of the calls for us:
1) buy a phone call blocker-there are a number on Amazon, we bought NADAMOO Call Blocker-not sure which is best but it can stops the repeat calls from same number
2) go to nomorobo.com they have a free service that works with major carriers that blocks known spam/scan calls-sometimes you get one ring and that is it,we just use free service with Time Warner, if you dont like it you can disable-easy peasy set up
Now they know yours is a phone someone will pick up. They sell your number to others people and they will call you. Don't answer!
My own home phone # showed up on my caller ID today when ringing. So far I haven’t left me a message.
Argh....
Lovely.
I read somewhere that some people record the triple tone, the three tones which indicate a bad number, as the opening sounds of voicemail. As long as the triple tone is detected, the automated scammer system should remove your number as bad, and stop dialing it. You can still continue your auto greeting after the triple tone, as supposedly the electronics processes only the triple tone. I have not researched the success of this approach though.
I LOVE the term “Vanity Rantity”!! GOOD ONE!!
I’ll tell you why some people answer these calls because many now appear with the same area code and your local exchange. Many are spoofed phone numbers from the dregs in India.
NoMoRobo fantastic and free for land lines and “Mr Number” for cell phones is almost as good but needs more people who get a bogus call to let Mr Number know so as to improve their database of bogus callers.
NSAs open budget is around 10 billion. Snowden said it was around 50 billion off the books per year for surveillance and data collection in 2012, if I recall. They cant even tell us how many work for the NSA, it is estimated between 30,000 and 40,000. The NSA is the largest employer in Maryland.
What % of eligible voters even know there is such a thing as the NSA?
Freegards
well i don’t speak, and i feel if they get to the answering machine, they know it’s a working number.
A family member gave me an Iphone 5s a couple of years ago and I activated it with Verizon. Shortly after getting the number, I started receiving text messages and phone calls for the previous number holder. I was able to block most of his stuff, but still get an occasional phone call or text message from some acquaintance or relative of his to this day. His auto body shop called me the other day to say his car was ready. I know the person is teacher, has a couple of kids, and is a church goer. I also get calls from his union hall which I don’t block. I like to hear what they are dishing up..
One trick that eliminates SOME of the robocall contacts is to not speak after picking up the call, for 4 or 5 seconds. It will hang up and go on to the next number. Speaking will trigger the recording. If a person is there they will usually say “hello” or something after three seconds or so of silence, and you can tell ‘em to get lost, berate them in one of the south Asian languages or just hang up.
Ah you’re getting “neighbor spoofed”. Yes I get those too.
Our phone system is remarkably unaccountable isn’t it?
