Like I said, lazy.

The Chicom flu addicts airbrush history like the good Stalinists they are.

The “We’re all going die in two weeks” hysterical tantrums started first week of March. I recall it vividly.

Y’all want to lynch the mayors and governors who issued lock down orders. Economy was taking prior to the orders.

Yes, I certainly hold governors responsible for what happened in their state under their direction - both good and bad.

Your going to see a lot of businesses closing due to this draconian Democratic shutdown. I would say your going to see 50 to 60% of small businesses closing permanently sorry to say..

“The economy was tanking due to COVID before the lockdowns. Is that more clear?”
************************************************
Yes, of course. We ALL remember the millions of weekly unemployment claims that were occurring routinely before the lockdowns.

Oh...wait.. maybe I’m confused. Or, more importantly, perhaps YOU are the one who is confused. Maybe the beginning of the mass layoffs coincided with the actual closure and lockdown orders?

Do yourself a favor, don’t accuse your fellow FReepers of being ignoramuses...they’re NOT. They have eyes to see and brains to comprehend. And they DO comprehend!

Yes, in some form. But in the transition how can a business stay opened, fully staffed and provisioned, waiting for that return?

In my town, restaurants are open but finding customers afraid to come out from the “incarceration”.

I think you don't understand the seriousness of what is going on. Business is complex and it is much more than just demand will return. Most people are estimating that 40 to 50% of all restaurants will close. They sustain themselves with cash flow. Some people on this site don't understand that a business is not a household. Businesses don't have 6 months worth of savings because businesses are not households.

We will never be the same again as a country. Many people are forecasting a third or more of small businesses closing for good. They can't make it without cash flow - it's the way it works.

Millions of people are not paying their rent/mortgage which means banks will eventually go under without a bailout from the federal government. Entire malls are on the brink of closing for good. We are in a depression or near depression and it will become more obvious as time goes on. Even the White House believes unemployment is 20% and will go higher. Most believe 25 to 30%. One out of four are out of work. Something to think about. A commercial real estate collapse is a very real possibility with businesses closing. I know someone who works for a commercial real estate firm and they are going bankrupt. No store is paying their lease payments and they can't pay the bank.

Trump knows all this, of course, which is why he has been urging everyone to open up asap and he can't say anything bad that is going on since he doesn't to deflate consumer confidence but many people get what is going on and it isn't good.

Macy's has reopened 190 stores nationwide out of 551. They don't have many shoppers because many are scared. They will be closing for good about 20% of their stores or about 100+. There is an economic calamity going on and your thought is that demand will return. I wish it was that simple.

All those graphs show me that everything tanked because of the virus. People changed their behavior before they were ordered to stay inside. Your graphs are not surprising at all. The lockdown exasperated the economic calamity going on. I doubt those unemployed will feel better knowing the economy started to go south a few weeks before the lockdown. The lockdown is giving us the depression. You are really splitting hairs.

That still is no improvement. It is obvious that any downturn is due to the virus and the lockdown made it much worse. Enjoy the depression.

Yes, 6 months is too long for a service business , most businesses, to stay open.
Do they have to close.

But demand returns and they can be re-opened. By the original operator, or a new operator?

I’d bet my money on the proven successful one.
If that is possible under our laws.

Strange how sneaky this virus is, even sneaking it’s damage through our laws!

And the commercial real estate leases...
Demand for them will return and some company is going to have to provide the supply.

There’s going to be a huge for US food this harvest. Many other suppliers are not functioning well.
But ‘demanders’ will be broke. Gonna be interesting.

Sadly, this includes Donald Trump. Trump was OK with the shutdown of the private sector (the federal government kept on working), and then the ‘Rat governors and mayors picked up the ball and started running with it. Various GOP controlled legislatures (Michigan comes to mind) failed to do what needed to be done, which was to vote out articles of impeachment against Gretchen Whitmer.

I’m still going to support the Donald in November, because he is the last best hope. A loss to Biden would be devastating.

Most people have no idea the damage that’s been wrought and are unable (or unwilling) to see the forest through the trees.

I think people are going to be shocked at how many businesses remain closed and boarded up after the lockdowns are lifted.

You can't hold someone's head under water for an hour and expect they'll come up gasping for air when you finally release them. This is exactly what we've done to the economy.

Yea, and....
So not the governors fault then huh?

In my state i have basically 2 places to go to..the grocery store and the liquor store.
I am dying to go hit the bar, order a burger and a few beers and watch the game on tv.....so does THOUSANDS of others.
BUT I CAN’T!
Who’s fault is that?

Blue states hardest hit. They got what they voted for sooner than they expected.

Unfortunately, many of them are fleeing to red states and will spread their moral and spiritual death contagion there.

The entire country looks like Detroit.
—————-
Can we please stop with the Detroit bashing.
I see a lot of remarks like this, but Detroit prior to the shutdown was on the upswing. The young population there has been on the rise, much of it due to Dan Gilbert and Quicken loans HQ. New restaurants popping up every day. A police chief that believes in the 2nd amendment and urges its law abiding citizens to get their CWP to protect themselves. Mayor Duggan is a Democrat, but operates more like a moderate Republican. It’s not perfect, but Detroit is better today than it has been for decades. On the other hand, we have a governor who’s trying to destroy it.

And the head cheerleader for the “let’s lock it all down and cower” crowd weighs in.

The extended Governor-imposed lockdowns that you relentlessly pushed for and defended have imposed economic suicide on this country. They were part of a progression of events propelled by media-driven fear, so yes, our stock market and economy were shaky in weeks leading up to them. Which is all the more reason to have made them as brief as possible; instead they were extended by moving the goalposts from “not overwhelm hospitals” to “no new cases”.

We used a sledgehammer to swat a fly and it was applauded by you every step of the way. Wear that badge proudly; you’ve earned it.

We are a small town, fast food, nail salons, some odds and ends businesses, biggest employer is Kroger’s. We’ve used the drive thru to have something I didn’t have to cook.

The worse part is Medical, we basically have very little. You have to make a 2 hr round trip into Memphis + wait time. Telemedicine is not up and running well, nor does it fit all medical needs. Woke up with a reaction to Glimerpride, eyelid swollen and red, Ophthalmologist is not in on Friday, So had to use the Little Clinic at Kroger’s, which is a poor sub for a full eye examine. Salve for the eye, turns out I react to it too.

We tried a Cell Phone Telemed, not much the Ophthalmologist can see but a swollen eyelid and it spreading to other one. They are Closed TO PATIENTS. The 1st drug is a necessity, type 2 diabetes, it was the 3rd try. Has tons of eye issues attached to it. Needless to say the Eye doc and Endo don’t confer. Going through the list of Type 2 drugs they all have eye issues. GI disease is bad and limits what can be eaten.
