Historic Gesture: Italy’s Move to Reunite Ancient Temple Treasures with Israel

In a heartening revelation, a prominent Italian parliamentarian has ignited excitement and hope by suggesting that Italy might hold certain ancient Temple vessels – and they wish to return them to their rightful home: Israel.

The roots of these vessels date back to the destruction of the Second Temple, a pivotal event in Jewish history. Over the millennia, the fate of the Temple treasures became the stuff of legend, with many speculating their whereabouts.

The Italian connection traces back to Rome’s conquest of Jerusalem in 70 CE, during which the Romans took many of the Temple’s artifacts. Historical and archeological evidence, including the famed Arch of Titus in Rome, depicts Roman soldiers parading with the Temple’s Menorah.

This exciting development underscores Italy’s deep-seated respect for historical and cultural integrity. By considering the return of these artifacts, Italy not only acknowledges the importance of these vessels to the Jewish people but also takes a step in rectifying historical wrongs.

How many Palestinian artifacts did Rome take in 70 CE? There must have been many works of art and literature like we see in the Arab world today.

Best to keep them in Italy and tag them as on loan. Not a good idea to send them back to be bombed.

Yeah, I'd like to see a list of these artifacts.

BTW, MalwareBytes blocked the site in the link.

Gibbon says that the menorah is at the bottom of the Mediterranean. Israel should go get it.

Not sure the timing of this is very helpful.

Hamas is using the excuse that they are defending that crappy golden dome in Jerusalem from being destroyed to make way for another Jewish Temple to The God of Heaven and earth.

“Gibbon says that the menorah is at the bottom of the Mediterranean.”

My money is on some catacomb in the Vatican.

Both my Norton 360 Prenium and MalwareBytes Premium blocked the site due to “Riskware”.

That’s 70 AD.

Don’t allow them to change the language.

I’m not so sure about that. The sack by the Saracens was pretty thorough. I love articles like this but it sounds like Italy’s possession of any of the temple vessels is speculation by the legislator. I’d truly be surprised by any. The menorah of course would be the big get but I don’t subscribe to the speculation that the Vatican has it. It was supposedly solid gold— too valuable not to have been carried away when Rome was sacked, either by Alaric or by the Saracens

“Gibbon says that the menorah is at the bottom of the Mediterranean. Israel should go get it.”

1. I can’t see the Romans just tossing something away that contains so much gold. They would have taken it and either melted it down, or kept it as a bargaining chip for some future Jewish state. BTW, even a modern re-creation of the Menorah that is plated 1mm thick (i.e. not solid gold) has 43kg. of gold, worth something like $2.7 million in today’s dollars. https://templeinstitute.org/history-holy-temple-menorah/ No, they didn’t just toss it into the sea - and, besides which, what’s on the Arch of Titus - among other things, Jews being paraded down the street in Rome, carrying a (the?) Menorah. THAT’S where it was taken.

2. The “bottom of the Mediterranean” is a VERY large place. Even if you can somehow specify a box that’s 5 miles x 5 miles (and I doubt that), there have been over 1,950 years of silt being built up over it, so just going to find it will be a nearly impossible task. If it was so easy, it would already have been done.

Maybe before responding you should have gone to Gibbon to see what he says. You could have saved yourself some trouble.

An easy gesture to make since I don't think any authenticated artefacts from the Second Temple exist.

I would assume they were melted down for coins soon after being paraded in Rome. The Jewish Revolt was terribly expensive for Rome and the soldiery would have been owed a share of the loot as pay.

Of course Hebrews were the only ones there at the time. I forgot the sarcasm tag. There were no “Palestinians” in the modern sense until Yasser Arafat decided to call himself one. He’s from Egypt.

Well, for one, we know there are many ancient treasures in the Vatican even if we don’t know exactly what they are. And for two, the Vatican has actually be extant throughout the period since the fall of the Roman Empire, while the national government of Italy has not.
