After watching heartrending scenes from hurricane zones, New York emergency officials are changing their rules so people can bring their pets to shelters in a disaster.
That means pet-loving New Yorkers won't face the same wrenching choice as in New Orleans, where residents were forced to abandon their pets before entering shelters - or risk their lives to stay at home with their cats and dogs.
"We've always had a strong position that only service animals would be allowed in shelters," said Joseph Bruno, head of the city Office of Emergency Management. "We're going to have to change our approach in response to that."

Just what we need; A bunch of dogs in a highly stressful situation locked into a big room with old people, little kids and other people's cats. That'll work.

Glad they are changing this. NYC resident love their dogs and I am sure would never leave. Most NYC dogs are very used to lots of people and are not prone to getting nervous in big crowds.

I agree. Allowing folks to bring their dogs should be more beneficial than not. IMHO there may be some issues but overall dogs are more loyal to people than some people are.

You may want to click through and read the entire story. They outline differenct scenarios, such as involving animal shelters to take the pets to pet shelters to be later reuinited with owners. Or some shelters designated as those allowing pets, with separate areas for pets, where owners on-site can visit.
It's worked in other places. It's not rocket science.

I did read the entire story; I still think it's a bad idea. Just my opinion.

There are numerous dog parks in our city, and overall, the dogs behave very well together. I wonder if this is something that certain shelters might be able to offer. It would keep at least a lot of dogs in one place, there would be only one area for "clean up on aisle five", and humans could sit in the fenced area with their dogs. There has to be a better solution than just abandoning animals or staying behind with them in a highly dangerous situation.

Not a dog owner, currently, but certainly a dog lover. (tagline aside)
I did point out that it was just my opinion.

Sheltering pets is a complex task: Some people are allergic to animals, dogs need to be walked and need room to romp, and aggressive dogs can be dangerous to people and animals. Not for us ... we've got mama wrapped around our paws.

Most posts on FR are opinions LOL
Actually I don't think that shelters should have to take pets but work along side organizations that do so when someone is making the decision to go to a shelter it won't be hindered by not being able to take your pet.

It is so nice to hear someone out there finally has a heart. Their pets are all some people have. So hearing they are being helped along with people is just wonderful. Pets have feelings too! :)

Cool! I wonder if she rides him with a saddle. Longhorns look really bony so I'd think it'd be real uncomfortable if you didn't. But where do you get a saddle for a steer? Another consideration would be what to do if he decides to turn his head real far around and scratch his butt with his horns. I've seen goats do that before and I'll bet Longhorns do it too. It'd knock ya right off. I think I'll stick to my horses, thank you very much. ;o)
