London, England (CNN) -- Heads hacked off, a bite from a lion, tiger or bear, massive muscles on massive men -- all clues that an ancient cemetery uncovered in northern England is the final resting place of gladiators, scientists have announced after seven years of investigations.

The archeological dig has found "what may be the world's only well-preserved Roman gladiator cemetery," the York Archaeological Trust said.

“...massive muscles on massive men...”

How does one know what the muscles look like when they decomposed thousands of years ago?

Sounds like Anderson Cooper is now writing copy.

Heh. Well, the bones give you clues as to the once-attached musculature. Maybe they gave Cooper a bone?

I saw a very interesting film from the excavation of a gladiator cemetary in Ephesus. The even identified the ramains of one of the individuals. Many of the skeletons had woulds related directly to dying from the sword thrust down the neck into the heart when a glaqdiator was vanquished. Many had a stange hole inthe head where when they were to damaged to live they were pulled oout of the arena and excuted by being hit on the head. I don’t think this find lives up to it’s claim!

Boy, life was tough back then. No big signing bonus, no NFL orthopedists, no arthroscopic surgery when things went wrong, no transfusions or anesthesiologists. Just getting your head hacked off and being buried with a pile of horsemeat. No thanks.

That mindset of that culture is difficult for me to understand. People had to sit down and plan these things out.

YEARS ago I read a book on some of the behind-the-scenes-arena stuff.

One chapter told of the flesh of dead gladiators or others being sewn on to burlap. Slaves then had to wear this covering and go into a lions cage, acting submissive.
It seems the newly-captured lions were afraid of humans and had to be trained to attack them. That and to get them used to the taste of human flesh. Rough on the slaves. Reminded me of the meticulous way the Nazis designed their crematoria to use the melting fat of their victims as a fuel supplement.

The book also mentioned a bunch of sickos who would wait along the route of the Christians as they were led to the lions or other animal slaughters. They would jeer and feel up the victims as they passed. One time the guy in charge got so disgusted, he captured them and put them “on stage” with the Christians.

The book also mentioned how baboons were trained to rape children.

Gave new meaning to the word “depraved”.
