History of modern man unravels as German scholar is exposed as fraud [2005]
The Guardian ^ | 01/14/2015 | Luke Harding in Berlin

It appeared to be one of archaeology's most sensational finds. The skull fragment discovered in a peat bog near Hamburg was more than 36,000 years old - and was the vital missing link between modern humans and Neanderthals.

This, at least, is what Professor Reiner Protsch von Zieten - a distinguished, cigar-smoking German anthropologist - told his scientific colleagues, to global acclaim, after being invited to date the extremely rare skull.

However, the professor's 30-year-old academic career has now ended in disgrace after the revelation that he systematically falsified the dates on this and numerous other "stone age" relics.

Yesterday his university in Frankfurt announced the professor had been forced to retire because of numerous "falsehoods and manipulations". According to experts, his deceptions may mean an entire tranche of the history of man's development will have to be rewritten.

"Anthropology is going to have to completely revise its picture of modern man between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago," said Thomas Terberger, the archaeologist who discovered the hoax. "Prof Protsch's work appeared to prove that anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals had co-existed, and perhaps even had children together. This now appears to be rubbish."

The scandal only came to light when Prof Protsch was caught trying to sell his department's entire chimpanzee skull collection to the United States.

Yeah, well I would ordinarily respond to your irreverent post by arguing that the science of global warming is settled and that the consensus of opinion among those in the global warming community may not be impugned.

Unfortunately, the well pump has frozen up and my cattle can no longer break the ice on the troughs, so I'm a little too busy right now.

Both this and the Piltdown hoax were eventually discovered by other scientists. Honest mistakes can be caught and corrected. Deceptions like this require punishment in addition to correction. The orthodoxy of the global warming crowd is currently the worst threat to science. Things are so muddled that peer review is not being exercised in too many instances.

The chapters in which I know how to read the date on an article and post it correctly? No, I’ll be keeping those.

Modern humans and Neanderthals were parallel branches of the same tree, not ancestor and descendant.

Herr Doktor Professor PReiner Protsch von Zieten faked a little data. BFD. This story is 10 years old and since then his hypothesis has proven at least semi- viable, accurate even, even if his facts were fake.

Und so wetter?

Agreed, it's an old story, long ago exposed and punished.
Since then much new evidence has been discovered about relationships between ancient Neanderthals & humans.

“...the vital missing link between modern humans and Neanderthals.”

Come on! I discovered that decades ago; the missing link is CLEARLY my ex-husband! ;)

It IS dated 205.

Is it dedicated to Caracalla? He gets all pissy if he isn't recognized. And you don't want him ticked off at you.

Sure it is. The problem is that the peers are in on it.

“Sure it is. The problem is that the peers are in on it. “

Different segments of science have come through similar periods. In the 30s through 1960, advocating continental drift was near suicide as “everyone” knew there was uplift even if we couldn’t give a good explanation as to just how it was possible. The Colorado Plateau was a prime example. Now we see the rifting to the west as contributing to the uplift. So much that couldn’t have been understood without lateral plate movement, subduction and spreading now makes near perfect sense as long as we don’t become complacent and non critical.

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve

in local libraries
"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Am reading a really interesting book right now: 1491. History of America pre-Columbus. Somewhat PC but not too bad.

Points out that anthropologists come up with the date the first Americans arrive based on the earliest evidence. Then they build their careers on that evidence and get all torqued when people find evidence of earlier people.
