Did anyone else notice that the sound track on the annoying TENA ad was recently changed? The singing in the car was dramatically toned down and the horrendous cackling laugh in the movie theatre was removed.

Do you have a link to compare one or the other?
And don’t say, “Depends!”

I noticed thirty years ago that some advertisers had moderated their sound to make them less annoying.

Tell that to my local AM Radio in the San Francisco Bay Area. There is some service app that helps you compare new car prices in your neighborhood, and they insist on using one of the most annoying, brain dead loudmouth women, I’ve ever heard on the air.

The company is TrueCar, and their spokeswoman sounds low rent, like somebody who would start a knife fight over the next available washer and dryer at the Laundromat. Those in my area know exactly who I’m talking about. Apparently, the people from that company don’t care what we think, and continue to foist Ms Ghetto Girl upon our ears, month after month.

Yes. But why did they make it to begin with? Who thought anyone wants to be that weird woman?

They can get dumb people like me to stop and stare and wonder, but I never knew what the product was. I don’t get it.

I’m thinking of an headache remedy from 45 years ago in which a man is given a bachelor party and a girl on his lap says “Didn’t Snookums like the party?” One of these was very annoying and then they moderated HER voice.

Another was for a false teeth glue in which the woman speaks with clinched teeth and sounds too much like Ruth Buzzi. A few weeks later they changed her voice to a less annoying one.

Then there was a public service announcement with Brenda Vacarro in which she would speak, then take a rasping breath, speak some more and inhale in a very rasping voice.
A few weeks later the rasping was gone.

As for radio, they have always been annoying, and loud. Car salesmen were the worst. The louder the advert, the lower the IQ of the people you are trying to reach.

I can’t hit the “mute” button fast enough when that commercial comes on, so I haven’t noticed that they’ve toned down the sound.

I wish someone would clue advertisers in to what it’s like watching their ads on large screen HDTVs at night. The room is usually darkened or subdued such that when ads come on that are mostly a white screen with some lettering, it’s like drilling into your eyes with a searchlight.

These ads force the viewer to either close his eyes or turn away from the TV until the searing whiteout diminishes. It’s not that different from being blasted by sudden volume increases; whatever their product is, it gets lost in the blaze.

Believe it or not, some TV stations actually encourage DEAF people to tune to their station during possible tornado weather and leave the TV on when they go to sleep. For those who hear, a loud beeping wakes you up, and a flashing white and black screen is supposed to wake up the deaf.

If that works it actually sounds like a good idea. I never lived anywhere there are tornados but it seems like “early warning” is the only help available.

Brenda Vaccaro was Rossane Barr before Rossane was. Raspy voice, slouchy manner. She was also simliar to Suzanne Pleshette, except, of course, Suzanne was a knock out back then, and her earthiness was the perfect foil for Bob Newhart’s nerdiness.

I have the DVDs of the Bob Newhart shows with Pleshette.
What is jarring about the series is how Bob’s character treated her. Viewed with today’s cultural eyeballs, he was a chauvinist, insulting, demeaning husband. It’s amazing to watch now.

Yes, I did notice it, because it was one of those commercials which caused me to make a leaping dive for the MUTE button on the remote.

What's a "TV"?

LOL! No cable since 2005, and no broadcast, either...

I didn’t notice because I beat light speed records grabbing the remote and muting that commercial. It’s the only commercial that I do mute.

They not only altered the sound but, at least in the movie cackling scene, they reshot the video. The woman appeared deranged in the original version of the commercial. I wonder if the product manager managed to get his or herself fired by letting the advertising agency’s hideous original commercial get approved and released.

Same for me, but I don’t have quite as long as you do.

I remember using the TV to lull me to sleep at night. If I would use the timer to automatically turn it off, the sudden lack of background noise would wake me up. The other extreme was far worse: I’d find a station that was going to play movies through the night and would fall asleep to it, but as soon as certain ads would come on the volume would shoot up tremendously and violently wake me up. So then I got satellite TV so I had the option of things like TCM with no ads. But ultimately I just ditched the whole darn thing because I couldn’t morally bring myself to continue to support causes I was against, that were just part of the whole bill. It was a great decision.
