The Viking dynasty that once ruled in Sicily and southern Italy imported muzzie scholars to tutor the royal children. The dynasty didn't last long. I believe they're descended from Hrolf the Ganger, who founded the Norman dynasty in Normandy (France), and was also the ancestor (some way) of William the Conqueror.

Alfred the Great is my 31st great-grandfather on my father’s side.

He rode since the snows of winter covered the land, through the kingdom of Mercia, where he found coconuts.

They could be carried by a swallow.

African or European?

Interesting about the coins, but the hysteria about “rewriting history” is flimflam. Alfred the Great, the only English called “the great”, is one of the key figures in Anglo-Saxon history, indeed, his cultural influence extends to the current United States of America. And, the current royal family descend in part from Alfred, as after the Norman Conquest the Norman line intermarried with the old Anglo-Saxon royal house. But journalists love to get publicity with “rewrite history” claims.

really? So do you have a list of every generation going back to Alfred? I guess if you descend from a later king, you just have to count back to Alfred. At any rate, that’s quite impressive.

My wife’s parents’ families are both from the province called Apulia, which has Bari as the principle city.

Rich in history dating to Greece, and true there was the Norman period. But there were also several other periods like Tuscan, Rome, French, Spanish, and there was German Holy Roman Emporer guy that built a cool castle with eight sides, etc.

Portrait of Saint Bede [© BBC]

Portrait of Saint Bede
St Bede -- also known as the Venerable Bede -- is widely regarded as the greatest of all the Anglo-Saxon scholars. He wrote around 40 books mainly dealing with theology and history.

Bede was probably born in Monkton, Durham. Nothing is known of his family background. At the age of seven he was entrusted to the care of Benedict Biscop, who is 674 AD had founded the monastery of St Peter at Wearmouth. In 682 AD, Bede moved the monastery at Jarrow, where he spent the rest of his life. By the age of 19 he had become a deacon and was promoted to priest at 30.

His scholarship covered a huge range of subjects, including commentaries on the bible, observations of nature, music and poetry. His most famous work, which is a key source for the understanding of early British history and the arrival of Christianity, is 'Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum' or 'The Ecclesiastical History of the English People' which was completed in 731 AD. It is the first work of history in which the AD system of dating is used.

Bede died in his cell at the monastery in May 735 AD.

From what I understand, all reports of "medieval muslim scholars" is bogus. In actuality, any scholars or scientists from that period of time and from the middle east were in all likelihood descendants from ancient Assyrians, forced by the locust armies of Arab muslims to call themselves muslim. Muslims then are as muslims now, good at raising their hand to strike against other peoples, and then using their scholars and scientists to conquer others. Just like today, with McCain and Obama giving Isis the Stingers and other high tech weapons which they use to kill us and others that are not muslim.

McCain, one of the biggest dumbasses in history.

Thanks River Hawk. All, or perhaps nearly all, of the post-Alfred monarchs in Britain have been descended from him, or rather that's what the paperwork says. The last of the Plantagenet kings is thought to have at least one million descendants in the US -- and his father, who was second to last, is thought to have perhaps ten million.

Yeah, that's never happened. ISIS captured some Stingers in 2014, apparently not too many, they shot down an Iraqi helicopter, which was piloted by elementary school aged Christian and Jewish schoolgirls. /s

Wonderful let’s destroy the legacy of Alfred the Great for some Mercian also ran

Is nothing sacred anymore

Alfred did not write the Chronicle

Most were written after his death

I’m going to chalk this off to Alfredphobes...
