The world's biggest-ever cruise ship, the 227,000-tonne Harmony of the Seas, a luxury home on the waves for 8,500 passengers and crew, was handed over by a French shipyard on Thursday after a 40-month engineering feat. At 218ft, it is the widest cruise ship ever built, while its 1,187ft length makes it 164ft longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower. The immense floating town, which cost close to one billion euros (£800 million), has 18 decks and will be able to carry 6,360 passengers and 2,100 crew members.

Agree. Went on a cruise with my brother once when he won it through work. Meh. No thanks.

“It’s unsinkable.”..........

Didn’t they also think the Titanic was “unsinkable”? Never say never.

“These newer massive cruise ships look so top heavy.”

They also look like very attractive targets for terrorists.

2,300 crew for 6,400 guests? That seems like a high ratio.

Yeah, how many football fields is that?
Or can it be converted into “Olympic swimming pools”?

The cruise lines like these huge ships because they require the same amount of ship’s crew (which is separate from the hotel crew) as a smaller ship and the public is foolish enough to pay a premium to go on these ships with smaller cabins and then to pay yet another premium for vanishingly small balconies.

Not going, thank you.

$600 per person for a seven day cruise

You get to sleep in the engine room.

That’s what I was thinking, the whole thing is focused inward. The ocean view doesn’t appear to have been a priority at all. It’s a floating resort and they only come out to visit ports of call.

The ocean is my love. We have a 40 ft sailboat that we’ve sailed all up and down the west coast. My dream is to buy a bigger boat and live on it. Hubby not so much. Lol. But I’ve never been on a cruise ship and never will.

My wife and I have cruised on both the Oasis and Allure, sister ships to the Harmony, and loved it. The ships are so massive it’s not really crowded except for some events occasionally staged in the common areas. We like the balcony rooms overlooking Central Park and Boardwalk. Watching the people across from you in the other balconies reminds me of the movie “Rear Window”.

French built? Does it still work if it’s upside down in the water?

Nimitz Class carriers, the largest carriers ever built, are about 97,000 tons. These things are more than twice the size. I think that is the best comparison. What it tells me is that this thing is probably too big.
