The Earths continuously changing magnetic field surrounds the planet like an invisible force field deflecting highly charged solar particles. Reversals are the rule, not the exception. Earth has settled in the last 20 million years into a pattern of a pole reversal about every 200,000 to 300,000 years, although it has been more than twice that long since the last reversal, the Brunhes-Matuyama, that occurred around 780,000 years ago. A temporary reversal, the Laschamp event, occurred around 41,000 years ago, and lasted less than 1,000 years with the actual change of polarity lasting around 250 years.
Our planets history includes at least several hundred global reversals, where north and south magnetic poles switch places, and take a weaker and more complex form that may fall to 10% of the present-day strength with magnetic poles at the equator, or even the simultaneous existence of multiple north and south magnetic poles.
These geomagnetic reversals occur a few times every million years on average. However, the interval between reversals is very irregular and can range up to tens of millions of years. There can also be temporary and incomplete reversals, known as events and excursions, in which the magnetic poles move away from the geographic poles perhaps even crossing the equator before returning back to their original locations.
Many doomsday theorists have tried to take this natural geological occurrence and suggest it could lead to Earth's destruction. But would there be any dramatic effects? NASA's answer, from the geologic and fossil records we have from hundreds of past magnetic polarity reversals, seems to be 'no.' But the magnetic north pole is moving faster now, actually, as scientists estimate the pole is migrating northward about 40 miles per year, as opposed to about 10 miles per year...

Think of the number of maps that will be worthless.
Well, at least Australia will finally get its map correction.
lol.
And the next catastrophism scam is (envelope please) magnetic pole reversal.
Only a complete change of lifestyle and delegaion of political power to unelected globalist bureaucracy can save the planet...
Oh noooo .... we’re ALL going to die. We need to turn over all authority and all our resources to the United Nations so they can come up with an action plan to save us.

A weak magnetic field would increase the cancer rates as dangerous radiation would more easily get through the weak ionosphere.
There is nothing much anyone could do about this, so it remains wait and see. Time scales are more likely to be thousands of years than decades.
“780,000 years ago.” Exactly, and not a day or minute more or less? Nonsense.
So, global warming is over now?
If there was such a thing as climate change, the moving magnetism would be the cause.
Just in time to hopefully to usurp the alarmism from the climatoligists, defund them, get the govenments to buy magnetic bracelets for each citizen that will prevent this, I am gonna file a patent toute suite.
You are such a denier. We are supposed to believe the world and endangered baby gay whales and kittens will be destroyed by us tomorrow if the democRATS don’t stop us today.
And?
I’m certain it is man-made magnetic pole reversal.
That direction indicator in your car will get you lost and never to be found again. Someone from the other side of the country will show up and be living in your house.
We will know when a pole shift occurs because birds will be confused. They will start flying south, and people will say “wait, did you know you’re actually flying north now?”. Birds will be like “what? That’s south, I’ve flown that way every year for like 2 years”. And we’ll say “no, that was south until just recently. Now it’s north”. Pausing somewhat, birds will ask “is east and west still the same?”. We’ll reply “yes, but there’s a totally different reason for that”, which will confuse birds even more, of course. Birds will go on to say “well, can we still eat worms and bugs?”. To which people will respond “Of course you can, idiots”. I think the whole discussion will just go downhill from there, leading to the end of the world as we know it.
I demand a givernment grant on the effects of neodynium magnets on earth’s magnetic field and a study on banning all magnets before they kill us all....
Pretty sure my SUV must have caused this.
I think it’s caused by too many people in China and India. They need to reduce their population, or send people to Africa or Argentina.
There is a big difference between “disaster” to a geophysicist and a biologist or technologist. While obviously the world has not geologically ended on any of these previous magnetic pole reversals, increases in biological effects like cancer would probably not appear obvious in the fossil record.
The more concerning thing is that if the rate of pole movement has really increased this much in the past century, then a shift could really be imminent. 600 miles seems huge to me for a single century.
Not only might cancer and other health effects be a factor, but our technology could be severely affected. Obviously there is no fossil record of the effects on technology, unless there really have been prior advanced civilizations on Earth. Maybe the Atlanteans couldn’t figure out how to keep their electrical grid working.
Solar flares produce the same effect as a nuclear explosion’s EMP and destroy electrical circuitry. If we enter a period of centuries where solar flares strong enough to do that are common, we will need to shield our electrical grid and devices. Or move to local power generation rather than a grid, and fiber optics or laser based telecom rather than copper land lines and wireless for telecom.
