U.S. Cord Cutters Watch More Netflix Than Amazon Video, Hulu and YouTube Combined
Tech Crunch ^ | 07/05/17 | Sarah Perez

Netflix is continuing to dominate streaming services in the U.S., not only in terms of penetration in cord cutters’ homes, as reported in April, but also in time spent watching. According to data from comScore, cord cutters are watching more Netflix each month than YouTube, Hulu and Amazon Video combined. But Hulu users are more engaged with the service on a daily basis, the study indicates.

The data from comScore was cited by MarketingCharts in its own report released this morning, and follows on earlier findings that the user base for subscription video services has now topped the cable TV audience, indicating a shift in how people in the U.S. are today watching television.

Netflix in April accounted for 40 percent of over-the-top viewing hours, compared with 18 percent for YouTube, 14 percent for Hulu, and 7 percent for Amazon Video. It also has the most monthly viewing days per household at 12.3 days.

But when you look at viewing behavior on a day-by-day basis, Hulu is far ahead of the pack.

On average, U.S. cord cutters are watching 2.9 hours of Hulu per day, which is ahead of Netflix (2.2 hours), YouTube (2.1 hours), and Amazon Video (2 hours).

Though MarketingCharts’ report didn’t delve deeply into why that’s the case, the primary reason is simply due to the fact that Netflix has higher penetration in the U.S....

That makes sense. Hulu gets more day to day viewing because they carry next-day airings of network TV shows. But Netflix has a much larger selection of original programming and classic TV shows, so they get more overall viewers.

I saw this,

The total number of people who use YouTube – 1,300,000,000. 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute! Almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single day. In an average month, 8 out of 10 18-49 year-olds watch YouTube.

Why Netflix is better than Amazon is because you can WATCH everything you see on the screen. Amazon muddies the waters by mixing in Prime videos with pay per view videos and other crap. So you have to dig through a lot of crap. IF Amazon made an EXCLUSIVE PRIME video portal they would be doing much better.

I for one quit Neflix after their push to all original programming. They used to have a lot more old movies which is too low brow for them now. Too bad it’s so cheap.

I don’t watch network programs now on rabbit ears.
Why would I pay to watch them on Hulu?

I agree, I had Amazon Prime for a couple of years but stopped watching the videos because I was too sick of wading through so much crap trying to find what I wanted.

The past year I watched a lot more Netflix, although I’ve pretty much given up on them the past couple of months because their movie selection has gone so far downhill. I’m not much interested in trying the “original” Netflix series.

I may give up on all of the streaming services until someone comes up with something that is far more comprehensive in selections and user-friendly.

I'm finding less and less to watch on Netflix and Amazon. Love Longmire, and that's ending soon. Don't like most of the rest of their original stuff. Wish both Amazon and Netflix would offer more and better documentaries. Schlockumentaries, ex: serial killers, sex scandals, don't count. Would also watch lecture series. A Mary Beard lecture series on Roman history, I'd pay to watch that. Netflix and Amazon could offer lectures on all sorts of subjects.

I watch NF, but one thing i hate, they NEVER have the popular movies you want to watch at the time of year you want to watch them. Streaming wise..

Independence Day? NOPE
White Christmas ? NOPE
and several others I cant think of right off the top of my head...

KODI solved those issues

Well, Netflix is available with the web interface on desktop computers, streaming boxes like Roku, many Blu-ray players, the TiVo DVR, modern gaming consoles with Internet connections, iOS and Android app for tablets and cellphones, and most “smart” TV’s. No wonder why everyone is watching them.

Netflix does have a larger catalog, but they have been in the streaming business longer than Amazon Prime.

AP is lacking in many new titles. They are adding a lot of old, remastered videos, but their newer video titles are not so good.

Both Netflix and AP seem to rely on a lot of foreign TV series and movies.

Netflix has been purging their catalog recently.

Hulu now offers ‘mostly’ commercials-free subscription in addition to their regular commercials subscription.

Several other services insert commercials. I never had much luck with those. About half-way through a movie, it would stall. I would have to exit and reload. When I tried to get back to the location were the stall occurred, it would run a dozen commercials — and usually stall again. It frustration wasn’t worth getting to watch — sort of — free.

I do watch more Netflix and AP than regular TV. I do record via TiVo most TV programs I watch, so I can skip or fastforward through commercials.

I noticed that with my AP. I went through my queue last evening and found several pay additions I did not add to my list. I also purged a bunch of prime offerings which I did not add, either.

AP is also bad about initially offering a TV series as Prime, but then switching it to pay-for within a few days. I hate such BAIT-AND-SWITCH tactics.

I find both AP and Netflix originals are hit-and-miss. Some series and original movies are pretty good and some are total crap.

The advantage with those services is that I can stop the series/movies and remove them from my queue and not feel too bad for about $10/month each AND NO COMMERCIALS.
