Last Jedi Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Is Lower Than Justice League

Well, it's hard to say anyone saw this coming. Star Wars: The Last Jedi has finally arrived in theaters and fans are super excited about it. Or, at least they were. There was a ton of hype leading up to the release and, deservedly so, considering all of the questions Star Wars fans had after watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens two years ago. However, things are not going according to plan, as The Last Jedi now has a shockingly low audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. How low? Believe it or not, it's even lower than the score Justice League currently has.

This likely comes as a huge surprise to anyone who was following the news leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Following the movie's world premiere, the social media reactions were almost universally positive. That led to an incredibly positive first wave of reviews from critics. The movie currently holds a 93 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is great and ranks among the highest in the entire franchise. However, audiences don't seem to agree with critics on this one, as the audience rating is at an abysmal 56 percent.

To say the least, this is not what Disney, Lucasfilm or director Rian Johnson had in mind. To put that in perspective, Justice League, a movie that isn't what one would call a critical darling, currently boasting a 40 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, actually has a much better audience rating. As of this writing, Warner Bros. latest DC movie has an 80 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is just one example, but in both cases, we see that audiences can dramatically disagree with critics. Though, in the case of Star Wars, this is pretty unprecedented.

As hard as it may be to believe, as of this writing, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is actually the lowest-rated movie, in terms of audience rating, in the entire Star Wars franchise on Rotten Tomatoes. It's close, but Star Wars: Attack of the Clones barely edges it out at 57 percent. The Phantom Menace is next, with 59 percent. Considering how much Star Wars fans seem to hate those movies, it's pretty amazing that The Last Jedi is ranked so low by those who have seen it. But it's also worth noting that critics were much closer in alignment with fans on the prequels, as Attack of the Clones has a 66 percent Tomatometer score and The Phantom Menace has a 55 percent.

So what does this mean? The audience score could change as more people see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but at the very least, this is a divisive movie. That could be problematic, as Lucasfilm has already handed Rian Johnson control of a brand new Star Wars trilogy, which he's going to plan out and will direct at least the first installment of. Given Lucasfilm's rough history with directors, having fired Phil Lord and Chris Miller from the Han Solo movie and Josh Trank from Boba Fett, not to mention this issues with Rogue One, can they really afford to have another director kicked off of a project?

That's not to say audience reaction will ensure that's going to happen. But Disney and Lucasfilm will have to take that into account, even if Star Wars: The Last Jedi dominates at the box office, which it looks like it's going to. In any case, this Rotten Tomatoes score for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is very interesting, as pretty much everyone expected this movie to be a home run for the franchise. There are no sure things in this business.

The movie was pure leftist feminist propaganda. Kill off the attractive Asian and make her short fat sister the star, Handsome pilot overly aggressive, the women teach him to run away rather than fight. Put an ugly beak on a woman because attractive women need not apply.

I don’t know....is it just me? Or is 7 years old a bit young for such visual mayhem?

Valid question. However, he was more into the space scenes and the animal characters. He's seen many of the other Star Wars movies.

The most blood and gore he ever saw was when I sliced my thumb a year ago. I was trying to open one of his presents, a lego set that required the use of a knife to open. I used it incorrectly and sliced open about a half inch over the main knuckle. Took over an hour to stop the bleeding...he saw what happens when you don't use a knife properly.

He'll still check my thumb every now and then to make sure it's healed up. He helped me change bandages, because it was just the two of us. My wife was out shopping, and didn't understand the severity of the wound. I wasn't going to call 911, never got it stitched up either.

Actually its faster than the speed of light, its hyperdrive.
I think there was a technical argument that a real time collision wasn’t possible, like from the Lost in Space movie, you actually pass through without hitting it in real space.
But then again it was in close proximity and the Supremacy is something like 50 miles wide.
Of course the nerds will argue this forever.

Carrie Fisher is only two weeks older than me and yes she looked like she was 80 but her real life antics did that, Mark Hamil was born in 1951 so he was older yet looked more fit.

They made Han and Luke a mess in their later lives, and Leia the leader even though poor C Fisher could barely talk and move at this point. The pilot Po had to learn to control his “toxic masculinity”. As mentioned the plot was forced, the casino diversion like a bad ST Next Generation episode.

This movie rattled the cage hard and maybe that's why some people can't take it.

Excellent sentence. This is a bold movie--and a better one for it. It's also a smart, thoughtful story and some people are just too stupid to understand it.

I think it is a given that Disney is going to milk the Star Wars franchise till there is not a dime left to be made.

After it can't make any money at the theaters it will be direct to video till it has been squeezed like a Turnip. Then it will mercifully die.

Excellent film-making.

It really is. There's a moment of silence in this movie that is so perfectly timed ... I won't give it away, but wow. That was all Rian Johnson.

But this one sounds too melancholy to see.

The little penguin looking bird with the big sad eyes in the scenes with the Wookie stole the show for sure.

Yeah that’s it I’m too stupid. The movie was an over long illogical preachy feminist mess. I’ll agree it had an acceptable core story that could have been done in 90 minutes. There was at least an hour of implausible nonsense.

TNT is running the original Star Wars which I am watching now. Leia in the new movie looks rough and sounds rough. You would not recognize her from the first film.

They lost me in the one where the diminutive fashion model was able to best jedi masters who trained for years just by picking up a light saber.

I was critical of Fischer in the last Star Wars debacle. She looked horrible, hardly the look of a general or leader, and her acting was bad as well. Then she dies shortly after in real life. They have to keep her in the next movie at least to transition the character, but now Hammil’s character is killed off and while he is still alive, somehow they have to bring back Fischer from the grave again.

Not the Hamill looked like had any interest in reviving the Luke Skywalker role. He seemed to show his true feelings through his character...that is “screw the galaxy. Leave me alone.”

Oh, since I am kind of harping on the movies dissappointments, I should mention that when only the bad guys have men for officers, and the rebels are all led by a bunch of girls (seriously are all rebel generals women? Help us general solo) it no wonder the rebels have been wiped out.

There were some scenes I enjoyed, but overall I was disappointed. But that’s ok. I watched episodes 4 and 5 on DVD again and now the latest Disney disaster is fading away.

So what does this mean?

The should have not killed off Han Solo in the prior release. It just “aint right.”
