A meteorological ‘bomb’ is set to go off along the East Coast, and dangerous cold will soon follow
Mashable ^ | Jan 2, 2018 | Andrew Freedman

An unusually powerful storm is threatening the East Coast of the U.S. this week with heavy snow, high winds, and record-shattering cold not seen in some places since the early 20th Century — if at all.

The storm will be the result of a combination of three strong pieces of atmospheric energy, known to meteorologists as shortwaves.

Think of these shortwaves as protein bars for storm formation. This particular storm, which is already beginning to form off the coast of Florida, will devour enough of them to allow it to become so powerful that it will contain hurricane force winds by the time it moves off the Mid-Atlantic coast late Wednesday night.

Because of the cold air in place ahead of the storm, winter storm watches and advisories for this event have been issued as far south as Florida, all the way northward to Massachusetts, which is nearly unheard of.

What my husband does on the outdoor faucets to help keep the pipes warm: Puts the beefy protectors over the faucets, with one or two of those disposable hand warmers (from Amazon) inside. Then he puts a couple of wool caps over the protector. Once activated, the hand warmers stay warm for 8-10 hours hours. Faucets are cozy; pipes haven’t frozen.

We moved from an isolated rural house in 2016. A couple years before that we installed a whole house instant-on generator. That was great! The only drawback would’ve been if the propane truck couldn’t have made it back to our place on the narrow, steep, mile-long road, with switch-backs. Once we were “iced in” for about 10 days.

You’re not on any list of mine.

I just group pinged a response to Jane Long’s post and your name happened to be on it.

Honestly, I didn’t even notice and believe me, it wasn’t intentional, so just cool your jets.

Think I’ll head into town today and get some of that.
Haven’t had water to the kitchen for about a week.

I put the protectors on (it doesn’t get that cold around here). But those hand warmers are a great idea! I use battery-run equipment for work - and have added insulation and a little space for those hand warmers to keep the batteries alive a little longer.

Plus the two-warmer ones in my boots!

Yea, whatever.

I live in Maryland. It’s going to be high single digits at night the next few days. That’s all anyone will talk about.

But, I got ‘em. When I was filling up with gas in Toledo yesterday, it was -10. (real temp)

They always freak out when I tell them I’ve tent camped at -7.

"But those hand warmers are a great idea!" I forgot to mention that he puts a little thermometer inside with the warmers, just so he can keep track. They're little plastic thermometer / hygrometer things for reptile cages.

Wow, you are a trooper.

Our heater broke. We have small children and a baby.

Thus, I leave the oven on all night, but it was not enough, so last night I put a box fan on it, blowing warm air throughout the house.

It still is not enough!

We have a bathroom that is not plumbed for AC/heat. It is very drafty so I keep that door closed, and this morning when I opened it there was a 30 degree difference between it and the rest of my house!

We moved out of a very old house in Oak Cliff (Dallas) in the mid-90’s to a (slightly) more modern house.

Going from natural gas Dearborns to central heat is wonderful. Old house - one room toasty warm while another room is barely above freezing.

The old houses were made to allow air to circulate and refresh a few times a day. Fine in the summer but not so pleasant in the winter.

I have really learned to like new construction.

It’s become something of a ritual in our household that started as a joke, but when it’s snowing like crazy and it’s freezing out, French Toast is quite comforting.
