An unusually powerful storm is threatening the East Coast of the U.S. this week with heavy snow, high winds, and record-shattering cold not seen in some places since the early 20th Century — if at all.
The storm will be the result of a combination of three strong pieces of atmospheric energy, known to meteorologists as shortwaves.
Think of these shortwaves as protein bars for storm formation. This particular storm, which is already beginning to form off the coast of Florida, will devour enough of them to allow it to become so powerful that it will contain hurricane force winds by the time it moves off the Mid-Atlantic coast late Wednesday night.
Because of the cold air in place ahead of the storm, winter storm watches and advisories for this event have been issued as far south as Florida, all the way northward to Massachusetts, which is nearly unheard of.

I don't know why everybody if flipping out.
Nor’easters are every bit as capricious as hurricanes. It could veer out to sea with little effect other than heavy surf. It could veer inland pulling impressive snow totals much farther south. Or it could turn into one of those once-a-decade snow-bomb white hurricane deals by stalling out in just the right place to keep pumping moisture into the record cold. We’ve seen over two feet of snow from that before even in semi-tropical southeastern North Carolina coastal areas. Roofs collapse because they’re not built for that kind of load, they have to call out the National Guard because they have next to no snow removal equipment, don’t need it at all the vast majority of the time. I’ve always said I’ll gladly take two feet of snow over 2 inches of ice any time, though. A very heavy ice storm is a nightmare, you can’t even sleep if there are large trees anywhere near the house, hearing them popping and cracking all night, just waiting for one to crash through the roof.

‘Bombogenesis’ seems to be this season’s meteorological buzz word...remember ‘polar vortex’? With the current cold wave, I am surprised the media hasn’t been jamming that one down our collective throats.

Well I remember Stella! It was awful here. It just missed NYC but us upstate were hammered instead. If it had hit NYC the way it hit us it would have been one for the ages.

It had a different history of formation, but had an impact on more than half the population of the US.
Yeah, I know.
Nothing in weather is certain but if they didn’t warn people of the potential, people would die.
Or more accurately more people would die.
Hindsight is always 20/20.
And yes,I do believe that with the severe temperatures that we are expecting, people are going to die. Happens every time.

LOL, I think you knew what I meant, which is that we can’t do anything to change a volcanic eruption, hurricane, or blizzard.
But we CAN prepare and brace ourselves for it.
I was wondering who was getting all the nice weather.
