Adeola Dorris just wanted to go home to Guyana.
But instead, she was standing among other stranded passengers amid stacks and stacks of luggage at Kennedy International Airport in New York on Sunday afternoon. Ms. Dorris, 40, an accountant who arrived at the airport on Saturday night, had no idea when her connecting flight would leave.
When the flight was suspended, I literally cried, she said. Because Im here alone and I have nowhere to go. And you cant tell me when Im going to get home. And I have to work tomorrow.

Egypt Air is offering a $50 deal to take you from JFK to JFK Jr
Those of you stranded at JFK, YOU ARE NEVER GOING HOME!
Danged snowflakes could not recognize an adventure if it stood them up and gave them a back-handed slap across the face.
Accidental travelers, indeed. This would never happen if you just stayed in your parents’ basements, as you should have.
I initially thought Big deal, a water main broke. Stuff happens, but if the article is correct, that was the least of their problems. This sounds like a complete failure of something for which contingencies were ignored.
LMAO.
Good God...is snowflakism now the major export of the United States? How in the world do liberals live on the daily flood of this crap?
BTW, I'm literally sobbing and shaking in my armchair as I write these words because I'm going on a hike at 10 AM and it is RAINING OUTSIDE! I literally don't know what to do. I literally think I'm going to melt into a literal puddle right here on my literal chair before I set foot into that awful literal rain.
I think there’s too much finger-pointing going on there. Air travel is already complicated with so many different players involved. In a place like NYC where the system is strained even under normal conditions, any problem becomes a major disruption.
I agree. Complex doesn’t begin to describe the logistical dance.
I’m a frequent traveler and haven’t had any real horror stories. Just inconveniences.
But, occasionally you hear stories of colossal failures like passengers held on tarmac for 4-5 hours. No food, water or toilet facilities.
The water main break was a stuff happens deal. If the system broke down as described for the rest, they should have had processes to follow. That’s all.
Possibly everything else was just barely manageable then the main broke. Couldn’t tell from the article.
May? June?
I grew up in NYC. There is not enough money in this world to get me to go back to that hell hole. Just thinking about it gets me nauseous, especially with this commie cop hating terror enabling slimebag they have as Mayor. I escaped about 10 years ago when the little dictator was Mayor, Mike Bloomturd who every monday would announce over the radio what he was banning this week. The final straw was when he went full Nazi and demanded landlords make a list of all their tenants who smoke and send it to the city. He literally replaced “Jews” with “smokers”...”All smokers must register!” And now they got a blatant commie who demands the city be a criminal sanctuary, I can’t even imagine the hell that city is now. 2 terror attacks in a month and he is protecting them. How do you get on a subway there and not sh*t your pants? At any moment you can end up at the pearly gates.
This water main break happened in the middle of all that.
The one "avoidable" problem, from what I've heard, is that the airport was filled with so many aircraft from canceled outbound flights that they couldn't process inbound flights efficiently. Some inbound passengers waited on the tarmac for hours because there were no open terminal gates to handle the aircraft. This is what they're referring to in the article when it says they should have canceled or diverted a lot of those inbound flights.
Correct. Buses and rolling stairs are available but seem to have been underutilized.
I’ve been to all NY airports numerous times. They are truly busy, which is why plans need to be in play.
I have. Endless delays into the evening (from an early afternoon flight) resulting in a final cancellation in the early AM making it pointless to try and get a hotel.
They have no contingency plans and they don’t care. Every major airport should be required to have an area to setup cots so people have somewhere to sleep, with at least sandwiches and water. This is not much to ask.
Watching the elderly sleeping on the terminal floor with full lights, TV audio, and cleaning crews coming through - putting vacuums up to peoples HEADS - was completely unacceptable. I was told that “this doesn’t happen very often”. Maybe at THIS airport but somewhere, every day, this is happening. There should be uniform plans on how to handle it. They treat people like cattle and get to go home while they leave their customers in awful situations.
Something should be done, some regulation for simple and inexpensive solutions.
My daughter recently had this. She had an unscheduled layover. I think it was New York. She planned to just crash in the terminal but security kicked everyone out of the terminal and made them sleep on the floor at baggage claim.
Of course there were lights, TV blaring etc all night. Baggage claim is also a non-secure environment unlike the terminal.
“Something should be done, some regulation for simple and inexpensive solutions.”
Yeah. lets get the government involved for “simple and inexpensive solutions”. LOL.
Yeah yeah, I was waiting for that one - the problem is the airlines don’t own the terminal, when was the last time you asked for a manager of the terminal. They’re nameless, faceless, inaccessible ghosts.
If they won’t do this themselves then a “little encouragement” is the only way - unless you have a better suggestion. What would your solution be?
I don’t believe some simple regulation stating that terminals of a certain size must provide an area that is darker, quieter, with cots, and accessibility to some form of food & drink, would be a huge government expense. Its not like I’m saying setup a new government agency. The fact is, right now they have nothing and do nothing. So long as they can herd you on and off aircraft they believe that is where their responsibility ends. They have vulnerable people that they’ve entered into a contract with, stating they’ll get them from A to B in a humane manner. The way it is not good enough. I hope you never have to experience it.
Ugh. I’ve not had that happen. Was the entire airport shut down?
I guess they close at night. They were there due to a delayed or cancelled flight. You’d think some logic would be applied.
