Once upon a time there was a massive flood across the Mediterranean Sea, an in-pouring of water so huge that it excavated a canyon five kilometres deep and 20 kilometres long, and created a waterfall with a 1.5 kilometre drop.
Evidence for the great flood, long hypothesised, has now been found by a team of researchers led by geoscientist Aaron Micallef from the University of Malta.
And while several Mediterranean traditions feature great flood narratives, the earliest arising from Sumeria and already well enough known to be recorded in cuneiform by the seventeenth century BCE, this one is unlikely to have been the inspiration.

Need date and name of culture that got flooded.
This flood occurred 5.3 million years ago way before modern man even existed.
The Samoans have a flood story in their ancient history they tell every so often.
So do the people of Houston.
Ah, but not that old.
What struck me was the red line that ran top to bottom around...I forget 'when'...it was way back in the BC era. It was labeled "The Great Flood" and it cut through all geographical regions.
“Noah?”
“Yes Lord”.
“I want you to build me an ark...”
...
“Lord, what’s a cubit?”
Bill Cosby, back when he was funny.
The cause of this prehistoric flood may be similar to the cause of the most recent one. Periodically, glaciers push down from the north pole. They push up debris and form earthen berms reinforced by ice. When the glaciers recede, the berms hold back the liquid water, forming enormous but tenuous lakes. With warming and rainfall, the ice reinforcement of the berm melts aways, cracks in the berm develop, and then the beam bursts, letting lose a torrential flood of water.
We are living in an overall ice age featuring periodic advances and retreats of glaciers. It’s called climate change. It’s been going on for millions of years, since the extinction of the dinosaurs (when the earth was much different, and in particular was uniformly warm). Warm the earth, and the dinosaurs will come back. The penguins and polar bears will go extinct because Tyrannosaurus Rex will eat them. Baby seals will be eaten by Raptors. Ptyerodactals will swoop down from the sky and eat Koala Bears and other cute animals. The secret herd of unicorns hiding in the tropical rain forest will be squished under the plodding feet of Brontosaurus.
We have to stop the warming of the planet before it’s too late. Also, we have to confiscate all firearms.
Ive got a theory about a possible worldwide mega-tsunami. Just a theory but Im hoping somebody did some related research, once upon a time.
In H.G. Wells story The Man Who Could Work Miracles the protagonist orders the Earth to stop spinning. Big mistake. Disaster of all sorts ensues, including a worldwide mega-tsunami when the oceans leap out of their beds and roar across the continents.
Could a BIG asteroid, striking the Earth at an angle, cause a lesser version of the same disaster?
Like I said, just a theory. But most cultures have a legend about a massive flood, roughly around the same time in history.
Generally speaking, a worldwide flood could have occurred at the end of the last ice age - at least in the northern hemisphere and I think it would have been about 50,000 years ago
This flood occurred 5.3 million years ago way before modern man even existed.
Exactly! I wonder why the author of this article chose to not begin with that salient fact!
Regards,
Whoops - about 11.5 - 12000 years ago
I strongly suspect that that wall chart was published by the Watchtower Society or the Church of Latter-Day Saints or such. In other words: Forget it!
Regards,
“Have you looked down in the bottom of that boat? Who’s gonna clean up that mess down there?” LOL
Why are you availing yourself of a more-specified (unnecessarily complicated) scenario?
Occam's Razor!
No need to slow down the rotation of the Earth even only a smidgen! Even an only smallish asteroid - say 5 km in diameter - would create a splash (and possibly unleash earthquakes and resultant tsunamis) sufficient to explain all the phenomena you are trying to explain.
Regards,
Bush’s fault. He hates Mediterranean pre-humans.
Theory not fact. Theories by definition are never fact. The best you can do is have a theory that resists disapproval. You know, that falsification thingy that global warmists ignore. And if a theory is untestable, it is meaningless, by definition.
