People are mostly very friendly all across the country until you get back to the high density areas. If you pull off I-90 and stop at the shopping centers before you cross the state line into Washington, the Idahoans there are just as unhelpful as most of the Washingtonians you will meet in Spokane. The people outside of the large metropolitan areas in Washington are generally as nice as you will meet anywhere else in the country. The people you meet along the I-5 corridor from Portland to the Canadian border are mostly standoffish compared to the rest of the country with the possible exception of the area about 40 miles North of Oregon to about Chehalis. This is from someone who has lived approximately six decades in Washington.

“I never want to have to shoot anyone.”

You have to get over that hang up.

What is your personal safety question? The one you mentioned in the title of the thread, but never got around to asking.

We used to have Jerusalem Crickets in Marin County until the 1977 drought - never saw any more (nor a lot of other species) after that.

I moved from the Bay Area in 2008 - to Las Vegas and then Arizona - and limit my California visits to the still-tolerable central and south Orange County, these days. I go to L.A. when forced to for business. Bay Area - never. You and your daughter will be much happier when you don't live there any more. :)

It did make me wonder where all the liberals who control Canada are located?

Ontario and B.C. mostly, with Quebec also having their fair share (although they have their own agenda).

My daughter fell in love with the school and the area.

This ex-Vandal loves to hear that. I grew up in Coeur d'Alene but came to love the Palouse and lived there for several years. Moscow is a wonderful place to live and I really enjoyed my college days there. Later I worked at the U of I and then at WSU. Work has since taken us halfway across the country but my wife and I are considering the Palouse for retirement.

“In one location, a man who was with his wife and daughter took a picture of my daughter and stayed right behind her for a while. This really skeeved me out. I wanted to scream “Get away from her!””

And THIS is why people from Cali aren’t always welcomed. It’s probably a better than even chance he was taking a photo of something else such as the mountain in the distance, the elk across the meadow, etc.

On the other hand, he was probably a human sex trafficking stalker. So I would never go back to Idaho...and I would also avoid Texas. It’s extremely dangerous there too.
California is much safer by every metric.

You hate fish, and you noticed people in tourist areas taking photos.

Just sayin’...

Actually I saw what one of the photographers was focused on.

My daughter was right smack dab in the middle of the picture. She was the focal point. Not a building or a landmark and she just happened to be in the picture. Not a picture of the whole group either. I looked at his phone as he was doing it because he had positioned himself in front of me and directly behind her.

We were in group of people and he definitely took a picture of her.

She didn’t want to come back to California.

She doesn’t even care that winter will be cold and snowy.

Of course that may change if she actually has to live through winter there.

Looks good on paper but so many of us here in the Golden State can’t even drive in light rain, let alone snow and if it gets below 68 we’re busting out fleece jackets talking bout omg it’s so cold. (It’s okay you won’t hurt my feelings if you laugh)
We’ll see.

She really wants to go there. I hope she gets accepted. She’s kind of putting all her eggs in one basket here.

The only other school she is even remotely interested in is Embry Riddle.

She’s liable to just enlist if those don’t pan out, but then kids change their minds on a dime.

There’s more to Idaho than fishing in the Snake River just like there’s more to California than the nutballs who are in charge.

California is a big state - before you paint the citizens of the state with such a broad brush, you may want to visit out side the large metropolitan centers.

I totally agree. I lived in California for a few years. Once you get away from the big cities, it's very conservative and friendly. I especially liked the Imperial Valley and the Mojave desert - 29 Palms, Joshua Tree, Needles, El Centro, Brawley, etc.

Now I'm in Connecticut and it's the same thing. We get a bad rep because the leftists and liberals of the inner cities overwhelm the rest of us statewide. I live in Newtown and almost all the towns in my area went for Trump. However, we can't overcome the massive urban votes coming out of Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven, etc.

The picture taking could be part of criminal investigation (not aimed at you).

My wife and I got so sick of the Bay Area Andy California in general that we just bought a place in North Idaho. It’s going to be a summer home for about six months and we will head back to Cali when the snow flies. My mom was born and raised in this area and her parents retired to a spot about a mile from our new house, so this is like coming home for me. I probably visited here the first time about 1956 and we came back for visits many times. Lots of change here unfortunately — North Idaho has been discovered and there is rampant growth all around Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls. The old mill towns of my childhood are all gone now.

As you observed, people here are as friendly as anywhere you will ever visit and everybody takes time to chat and catch up. I’m already a regular at the local coffee shop and know the owner and her staff. It seems that everybody I meet knows somebody else I’ve met — the connections are amazing.

It is indeed a very Godly place and such a refreshing change.

The really nice thing, of course, is you can speak your conservative mind openly and the chances are 98% or greater people will agree with you, not want to shoot you for wearing your red MAGA hat.

As an Idaho native (although currently displaced), I can say that we don’t care much for Californians moving to Idaho. However, you and your daughter seem like the ones who we like. I never could figure out why people would flee California and then try to make Idaho like the hellhole they left.

CDA looked like a tourist trap to me when we drove through.

I was expecting it to be much smaller.

On a funny note, my daughter was looking at a brochure for rafting down Hells Canyon.

She said “Mom! We should do this!”

You see, at home, we barely leave the house.

We ran all over the place up in Idaho.

But anyway, I told her we didn’t have time to do it and if we did the water would be cold and we would probably have to be hospitalized for sunburn after it was over. We are very fair skinned girls who need spf 1000 sunblock. :)

I have never traveled without my husband so I was definitely out of my element but we had a blast on this road trip.

We didn’t see and do nearly everything we could have. There just wasn’t enough time.

We did goofy stuff like we drove up to the Canadian border and back one day. I have no passport so I didn’t even put one toe on the other side because I’m a model prisoner.

The only reason we went up to CDA was my daughter wanted to eat at Cracker Barrel which is not in our area. Then we went to the border because we were so close.

She kept saying “Mom, this place feels like home to me. I never want to go back to California.”

I can understand your feelings. I sure as heck wouldn’t want anyone moving to my little piece of heaven and wrecking it with San Francisco(gag)values.

I wasn’t extremely open about where we were from.

I’m not extremely open about much of anything.

Another reason I’m glad we went is because we actually saw for ourselves that some places really are different.

I was starting to believe there wasn’t anyplace left anymore.

The liberals have methodically started to infiltrate all of the states but maybe in some places they aren’t nearly as numerous as the media would have us believe.
