I wasn’t referring to the article. If the ducks are a problem they need to go. My problem was with how supposedly intelligent freepers referenced autism.

Yes I have.

And on the front of the garage door.

The dang geese aim for it I swear.

But it is just part of living in the country. There are much worse things than duck poop. For instance, in SanFran you have human poop on the sidewalks.

I don't see why they can't just leave him alone, with his ducks, who aren't hurting anything.

You ever had to deal with duck poop in your back yard? Obviously not.

Which recognized Service Animal Organization certified these ducks as service animals? Show us the paperwork.

Yeah, except in this case the boy isn't asking to travel and fly with them. He's just asking to keep them in his backyard.

The town is way off base here. A yelping dog makes a lot more noise than a couple of quacking ducks. It is not like he is keeping them in a bathtub in an apartment building.

My daughter worked with autistic kids. She mentioned that little things like pets, board games, tossing a Frisbee (iow, things involving interaction with other living things) really, really helped autistic kids. Unfortunately, about two thirds of their parents were mostly interested in keeping the government checks coming and ignored her advice. They substituted big screen TVs, video games and other electronic gadgets which had the exact opposite effect.

These parents sound like the third who were great parents and want to help their son. The town Nazis need to back off.

FWIW, one of my favorite fast food places in town (a Wendy's) employs an autistic young lady. She is constantly cleaning up, getting drink refills or condiments for the customers and cheerfully doing whatever is asked. If nothing is being asked of her, she visits the customers (or other staff) and solicits duties.

You never see her standing outside and getting drags on a cigarette or buried in a cell phone texting like most fast food workers her age.

That’s because you’re a responsible person who knows what he’s doing. Many of these Bay Area fools are know-nothing dummies who are just chasing their next status symbol because Teslas aren’t as cool as they once were.

Indeed time to give them a teddy bear a blanket and a sucker to keep them calm.

When I googled “Bay Area Chickens”... Well I laughed.

I miss the farm, and love working with and raising animals. Chickens are pretty dumb, but tasty. Building a palace is not a good use of space.

And yes, you can get very sick and or dead from working with livestock and not knowing what you are doing.

3. so, what do these do-gooder HOA nosy idiots do with natural ducks defecating on their lawns?

Duck or goose poop is a lot easier to deal with than dog poop. Most of the time, it either dries up or gets washed away by rain. If it lands on your car or garage door, they sell those long handled brushes at your local auto supply store for about $4. They last forever and don't even require soapy water to be effective in most cases, just water.

Duck or goose poop might be bigger, but it actually washes away with more ease than the counterpart from a robin or sparrow.

I would side with the boy and his family except for this one point.

Service Ducks.

If you are so brain fizzled as to actually use this as an excuse, then yeah. You lose.

Get rid of the ducks.

They all have lake front property but they are blaming the penned ducks for birdshit on the beach?

These people are being assholes because they don’t like the weird kid who blurts out what he’s thinking.

I was quoting from the article:

“Dylan Dyke, of Georgetown Township, keeps his two ducks, named Nibbles and Bill, in a pen behind the family’s home, WOODTV.com reported. “

You ever had to deal with duck poop in your back yard?

You ever had to deal with a twice year infestation of Canada Geese as this lake and the rest of our small lakes here in Michigan have to deal with twice a year?

Which recognized Service Animal Organization certified these ducks as service animals? Show us the paperwork.

Since these birds are kept at home, who really cares except you and the anal retentive neighbors?

“citing an ordinance that prohibits residents from having farm animals on their property.”

If the law concerning the ownership and harboring of farm animals was in place at the time they purchased and moved in, then they have two alternatives: Get rid of the ducks, or move. If it was in place, they are responsible for conforming to the laws in place and should have considered this problem was going to come up at some point. Basically the law makes it illegal to house the animals on property within the city limits, period.

According to the ADA, To determine if an animal is a service animal, you may ask two questions:

“Is the animal a service animal required because of a disability?”

And only a doctor can determine the need and the ADA can determine if it matches up to the need. In this case having a pet is not a need, it is an attraction.

“What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?”

Making the owner happy is not a task recognized by the ADA. Under the ADA, it is training that distinguishes a service animal from other animals. Some service animals may be professionally trained; others may have been trained by their owners. However, the task that the service animal is trained to do must be directly related to the owner’s disability.

Feces … is a BIG issue to consider. If you are familiar with other exotic birds then you probably have heard of bird diapering. While the typical bird diaper system sold is suitable for many types of bird, it will not fit ducks or geese in most cases and diapers on ducks should be changed on average of every 4 hours if you can get one on. And according to the Atlanta Based Center for disease control, 212 salmonella cases in 44 states have been “linked to contact with live ducks in backyard flocks.” And that is related to feces in most cases.

It might be wonderful to find a pet that a child likes, but unless it has a purpose other than enjoyment, it doesn’t have a job. And if it is in violation of the law, it shouldn’t be housed there. It is not a service animal, it is a pet.

Dude, read the article

They live at the edge of a lake. His two ducks are likely nothing compared to all the other birds in the area. Show the impact of his two ducks versus the wildlife in the area.

Ohio Man’s Therapy Ducks Fall Foul of Local Ordinances

In a follow up article, the town gave the man a variance and agreed to let him keep his 14 ducks.

Fine. But would you let it freely poop on your neighbors’ lawns? That’s what is happening.

Did you look at the pictures in the article? They live at the edge of a lake. Prove his ducks are an impact over all the other waterfowl there.

“When I was growing up there weren’t any autistics”

I used to think that :-) ...

My son was diagnosed as “high functioning autistic” ... Overall, his speech is delayed. He will say things here and there (mostly repeating things he hears), but he won’t have a conversation with you :-). I mean, he’s only 4 going on 5, but he’s certainly waiting to start talking.

He’s frigging smart though :-). He’s been reading since the age of two, knew all of his letters before he was two (I swear he taught himself lower case letters), knows some Russian letters (he’s a BOT!), knows all of his numbers from 1 to 100 ... knows shapes (even knows dodecagon) ... seems intrigued by bisecting squares into triangles ... and is a pinball addict :-).

While I didn’t have delayed speech, I do notice a lot of similar “quirks” I had when I was young. People called me “weird” though, not autistic :-).

I think the reason you see more of the “autistic” diagnosis is that it’s understood a bit better than it was as recently as the 1980s. In the case of “high functioning”, they simply want to make sure he gets more focused training to break some habits that are linked to things like OCD and anxiety later in life (I suffer from anxiety ... tough to explain to people that don’t have to deal with it). He also gets assistance with speech development.

That’s about it in our case. No drugs, no cash prizes from dear old gubbamint ... just some help and guidance to make sure he doesn’t wind up with some of the bullcrap his dad had rattling around in his head :-).

The human brain takes 20 years to develop overall ... some are going to take a different path :-).
