So what if “service ducks” are a lame idea? Are they not allowed to be brain fizzled on their own property, just because their busybody neighbors are offended by a couple ducks?

Yes, I am capable of looking at pictures and I did. How do you even know there are waterfowl on the lake? If the neighbors are complaining, it’s probably because they have witnessed the “service ducks” on their yards. I seriously doubt if they routinely had flocks of Canadian geese in their yard, they would notice the difference; it would be full of crap all the time.

No, they are not allowed. City ordinance says so.

And if you read the thread - you would know by now that these ducks are not confined to their own property. They are crapping all over the neighborhood.

But you not being a “busybody neighbor” would not have a problem with that?

I hope not. Aspergers people can actually associate fairly well with non-autistic people, as long as they’re careful and recognize the social cues (they don’t pick those up easily).

If the boy’s ducks leave their own yard, it’s the parents fault. A child with autism of much severity, needs to be supervised at all times. Autistic kids do well with firm parameters, according to their various triggers. This kid needs a parameter that involves the ducks staying in their yard, if not their pen. And if the family is so duck friendly, then they need a room in their house where their child can be with his ducks, if they do not have a fenced in yard. One of his parents is probably waffley, and didn’t direct the kid away from the ducks, to a more suitable pet, in the first place. Consequently, they are now at risk for REALLY upsetting him, if they have to get rid of the ducks.

I did read the thread. How much “crapping all over the neighborhood” do you really think two ducks are doing? Do you think it could even be distinguished from the background amount of avian feces any neighborhood usually receives?

I am aware of the city ordinance. It seems rather onerous as applied in this case, and the neighbors seeking to enforce it seem awfully petty to me. Maybe they have a right to have the town enforce this ordinance, but I have the right to call them out for what they are.

Autism is the new ADHD. Everybody has it.

I’m not sure why there’s such an uptick, but as a nurse, I can tell you that people with severe autism are extremely difficult to parent. It’s NOT a behavioral problem that firmer parenting will solve, though firm parameters can help with some aspects of the disorder. It’s a heartbreaking burden that shouldn’t happen to your worst enemy. I have a nephew with severe autism. It’s a lifelong tragedy, and is absolutely exhausting for the parents. This kid looks manageable, if you can tell anything from the short news story.

Is a duck a farm animal?

This is a case where (to me) the community - the town and the housing association - should be looking togther, with the family, at how - what will it take - for the boy to keep the ducks (for now, cause it won’t likely be forever), instead everyone just saying no, no, no.

Looks like they live on a lake. Wonder how they keep other ducks from living in the neighborhood?

“You never know how an austic mind will attach to something. So here are my notes on this:
1. they (this family and neighbors) back up to a body of water
2. ducks (wild and domestic) are attracted to bodies of water
3. so, what do these do-gooder HOA nosy idiots do with natural ducks defecating on their lawns?”

The parents should move to somewhere there is not an HOA. More like out the country where the ducks can roam in a pond. They may win this but at what cost? Those ducks may wind up dead by “natural” causes when people get too upset over duck crap in their lawn and driveway.

Years ago I was talking with my FIL about the struggles our friends were going through with their autistic daughter. I was stunned when he emphatically stated that there was no such thing as autism as it didn’t exist when he was young and it’s actually just bad parenting.

Not much for me to say at that point. We all saw that the child had major issues well before she was 2. Her parents just thought she was tidy and very obedient (they were huge disciples of Growing Kids God’s Way) and were oblivious until a relative sat them down and strongly recommended they participate in preschool screening (as homeschoolers they were going to skip it).

She was born very early and that probably played a role in it all. In my father in law’s day babies born that early probably died instead of developing issues like autism, allergies, etc.

I’ve noticed over the years that people often base their beliefs solely on whether or not they’ve experienced the issue at hand. There are 40 grandkids on my husband’s side. Six have asthma (two are mine). My MIL doesn’t believe it’s real or serious because none of her kids had it. We’ve left our children in their care once and learned to never do it again due to her not “believing” that an asthma attack is real. Sounds insane but people can be irrationally stubborn that way. Autism is more frequently diagnosed, but there have always been weird misfits; maybe it was autism?

When we were kids, someone gave us ducks.
We had them in a cage out back.
They were noisy.
And despite the fact that we trimmed their wings so they couldn’t fly and that they were in a cage. They regrew those wings and flew away within just a couple of days.

The ducks are in a confined area on their own property. It said right in the article and I included that sentence in my excerpt. Here it is for you again:

“keeps his two ducks, named Nibbles and Bill, in a pen behind the family’s home, WOODTV.com reported. “

A duck can be a farm animal, it can also be a pet.

I have also seen people keeping pigs as pets. And saw in the news once, that the pig saved the owner’s life, when she had a heart attack and the pig went outside and brought some people in.
