If youve ever wanted to get a really good look at Uranus, then tonight is your best opportunity. Not only is the distant planet at the closest point to Earth in its orbit at the moment, but its also particularly easy to locate. The seventh planet from the sun can be found just to the left of the moon in the night sky all this week. The moon is starting to wane after last nights full moon, but it will still be shining brightly in the sky. Helpful for locating the distant planet.
Uranus lies south-west in the constellation of Aries, close to Pisces, and should appear as a small turquoise dot.
Youll be able to glimpse it with the naked eye, but youll get a much better view if you can lay your hands on a telescope or pair of binoculars.
October is the best time to observe this planet because its in opposition to the sun. Itll rise when the sun sets and stay visible all through the night; providing the clouds stay away.
Uranus as pictured by the Hubble space telescope (Picture Getty) Uranus has a few strange quirks such as rotating on its side, rather than on an axis like the Earth. Secondly, its actually colder than Nepture, despite being closer to the sun.
If you plan on getting out to see Uranus this evening then make sure you wrap up warm and try to get as far away from light pollution as possible.
What is Alexa doing posting Uranus to England? Grrrrr. Thankfully I refuse to have Alexa in my house.
Nope, not mine. Been back in the U.S. for over six months now. No plans on going back to the UK either!
Beat me to it. Well played
Not even with a flashlight and a mirror.
Obama will be visible in Detroit tonight.
I will wear 2 underwears at that time.
And I’ll be showing it in a different country every night for the next month. :)
Time to put cover my computer camera.
Does this always coincide with a full moon?
rotating on its side, rather than on an axis
And then we have to suffer through dumb news-critter statements like this. Two bits says this clown couldn't define an "axis" properly.
...and the jokes just write themselves!
Don’t stare directly at Uranus, use a mirror or you might turn to stone.
Everyone knows that's when three countries join together, start a world war and try to conquer the earth.
In Star Trek they chased Klingons around Uranus!
why are people in UK looking at my anus? seems pretty sick. oops, can’t say that it sounds anti muslim
Someone shouted out “Hey! There’s Uranus!!!” And all I could think of was “Damn, what an assh*le!”
