Walking the Atlantic City Boardwalk in 1928
Out on the YouTube ^

Posted on 11/17/2018 2:14:59 PM PST by SamAdams76

Well this is a window into a different world.

A six minutes video of walking through the Atlantic City Boulevard 90 years ago.

Everybody, and I mean everybody in either full suits or dresses. Even the children. Almost everybody in a hat.

Instead of Uber, you had pushcarts (called rolling chairs). Hundreds of pushcarts that are especially prevalent towards the end of the video. All pushed by men in suits. Even today, the push carts persist on the Atlantic City boardwalk.

I might be mistaken but I believe that the wooden planks you see in the video are pretty much the exact same wooden planks that are still on the boardwalk today. Except those planks are trod on mostly by sloppily dressed people in flip-flops, sweatpants and t-shirts. The people from 1928 would likely be horrified with how we dress today.

One thing that struck me about the video is that the novelty of it fascinated those walking in front of the cameraman. They kept turning around to mug for the cameras. They could have no idea that 90 years later, thousands of people would be viewing them as they walked down the boardwalk on what was for them just a normal day.

Pretty cool. I like seeing the boys mug for the cameras the same as they do today. Some things never change.

As a comparison, here's a reel of the digital effects from "Boardwalk Empire" which shows many of their boardwalk recreations and how they created them from small sets and lots of very good looking digital additions. See how you think it compared and whether they pulled it off or not. By the way, the music playing is the them from that show. I always disliked it, doesnt fit the period or mood of the show at all, IMHO.

A chilly day. I think the carts or rollers were called jitneys. Not only were people better dressed then but it was a real occasion to walk the boardwalk and see the sights. The boards have been replaced many times due to wear and hurricane damage; a lot of it was totally destroyed during the hurricane seasons of 1943-1960.

I hadn’t appreciated how prevalent wearing fur was among women.

General comment: thanks for this - interesting!

Specific comment: why’d all the women have those hideous hats?

I saw some women wearing what looked like raccoon coats, but none of the guys were wearing those.

It was a holdover from the last century. Bobbed hair and cloche hats characterized the youthful generation of 1928.

Watched it at bedtime last night, whomever did the conversion did a nice job! I didn't enjoy it that much because I found the camera-mugging people very irritating. :^)

The camera was obviously a novelty for them. I doubt they realized they would be enshrined in history and that thousands of ordinary people would be watching them on various hand-held devices 90 years later.
