Vanity: Gas range that isn't a piece of junk

Actually they aren’t.
I wish I’d had a digital camera back in the day so I had photos of the range and washer that died as a result of accidental discharges.

Have had a GE gas range for 15 years. Never so much as a hiccup. Highly recommend.

I was going to say the same. Although, the GE stuff is now owned by Haier. Wolf products are top notch, but cost a pretty penny. I guess it depends on what its worth to you. Spend the $ up front for a quality product, or spend it on the back end fixing a sub-par product.

I’m completely off-grid too... I bought the cheapest propane stove/oven combo I could find at Home Depot or Lowes.... I think it was abut $350.00. It is a “Premier” brand... Has been absolutely flawless for 6 years. No electronics at all.

GE used to make the best gas stove/ovens. Had one for years, trouble free.

I know, why would GE be making gas ovens. Because they can, I guess.

I disliked the size of those hunks of metal. We use this countertop oven ($99):

and since I'm allergic to gas fumes, we use two induction cooktops ($150).

Take a look at what Lehman's has for sale. They have propane gas stoves intended for off grid living - and also wood fired stoves.

We got an LG from Costco - two ovens, 4 burners and a center grill that runs on NG. Works great, would not trade for anything.

We have a Kenmore about 7+ yrs old. Very nice, But..
if I had to do it again I’d get a dual fuel range.
Gas top, electric oven. Why?
Heat from gas oven is waaaay more than electric. Have to have lots of air to support combustion. And yes I have a vent.
Not so in an electric oven.
Only problem is they are much more expensive than a single fuel range.

In 2016 GE sold their appliance division to China’s Haier Group, therefore GE branded appliances made from mid-2016 to present could be GE in name only, GE nameplate full of made in china parts.

In a pinch, I’d suggest powering the electric off of an uninterruptable power supply. It isn’t much wattage, with the most being the bulb in the oven, and the UPS filters the power through a regeneration step. In the boonies you may have a lot of spikes in the supply.

Also — electric gives you more stable oven heat.

If budget were no object I’d go for induction top and a set of suitable pans. It adjusts as quickly as gas, and with very little wasted heat.

I too live out in the boonies. The problem you are likely having with your electronically controlled stove and other electronic devices is probably poor quality electrical service. Until I finally put surge protectors on everything in the house, I had everything from land line phones to stoves to TVs dying left and right. I also finally just put in a whole house surge protector. After all that, I have no problems.

Maybe you can get the Amish to do it. In some places their population is growing too much for the youth to farm and they are transitioning to small businesses - furniture and kitchen cabinets here in Illinois.

I would definitely prefer luddite-grade appliances with no computers in them. The Maytag washers & dryers that I have seen work for twenty plus years are entirely mechanical, turn the knob and push the button.

My wife and I recently had to replace our Fisher Paykel washer and dryer units. Wife got them barely used from a friend of a friend for cheap, two years ago.

In that time, they've been nothing but trouble. Too much high tech, whiz-bang gadgetry, and micro computer controls. Even the mechanical parts were 21st century 'advanced' design and engineering crapola.

After about the fourth home repair, the bearings in the dryer barrel gave out, and the washer developed an annoying habit of jumping the tub off the three suspension supports.

Wifey couldn't take it anymore, so we went down to Home Depot and got a new Maytag set. They also have all the 21st century bells and whistles, but so far so good, and at least it's a trusted American brand.
