Super blood wolf moon: What to know and how to watch it
ABC News ^ | January 20, 2019 | Becky Perlow

Posted on 01/20/2019 6:25:36 PM PST by Redcitizen

Grab your winter coat, some hot cocoa and your kid's telescope on Sunday and head outside because the next super blood wolf moon won’t be showing its face for another 18 years.

While the celestial phenomenon sounds like something you’d read in a teenage werewolf novel, its actual meaning is derived from multiple sources.

The term "super" refers to the placement of the moon. This month, the moon will be at its closest point to Earth’s orbit, making it appear larger than normal.

The term "wolf" derives from the Native American nickname for January's full moon and the wolves who "howled in hunger outside the villages," according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

The term "blood" comes from the way the sun’s light bends and refracts off the Earth's atmosphere and onto the moon’s surface, making it appear red or copper at times. This phenomenon, called "Rayleigh scattering," is also what causes the beautiful colors of our sunrises and sunsets as well as what makes our sky look blue. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California notes, however, that clouds, dust, ash and organic matter in Earth’s atmosphere may change the expected color of a super wolf blood moon.

"We’re not sure what color it will turn. It really depends on the earth’s atmosphere, whether we’ve had storms, volcanic eruptions, all sorts of things," explained Dr. David Reitzel, an astronomer and lecturer at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

9th (Apr/May) = Flower Moon
10th (May/Jun) = Strawberry Moon
11th (Jun/Jul) = Buck Moon

And then there are Blue Moons - I remember a Summer in the eighties, I think in July, when this happened; we could see them both here, and it seemed odd and wonderful to me at the time:

OK, then the 13th moon in August could be Blue Sturgeon, but in September, the only possibility would be September 1 and 30, but September 30 would be Harvest Moon, with the September 1 moon unnamed.

#124. Ah yes, the old Turtle with Elephant Moon. Very rare, yankee.

DC area had clear skies and beautiful red-copper moon. It’s ending now. About 15-20*F with a 20-35 MPH wind. While the orb in space was a Blood Red-Copper Moon, my butt was a Blue Moon. Paging the Marcels, sing me a few bars or get me to one.

Clear skies in Manhattan, with a few passing cumulus clouds, 14 degrees and winds about 20 - 30 mph. From our roof we had a great view of the moon almost directly overhead, rust-red in color. Last bit of partial shadow disappeared at 1:59 a.m.

Thanks to you Redcitizen for this thread, and to all for the comments. Lots of fun!

I don’t see where the excerpt mentioned last night’s lunar eclipse - just the strange “super blood wolf moon.” Sometimes, if the writers bury the lede, you have to dig it out and put it in the snippet to bring it more to people’s attention.

It wasn’t totally clear. It ended up hazy, enough to see totality but not enough to get the color.
