Japanese scientists have awakened the cells of an extinct woolly mammoth in an experiment that could one day bring the prehistoric beasts back to life.

Researchers from Kindai University in Osaka extracted bone marrow and muscle tissue from a long-frozen beast and injected it into the ovaries of a mouse, according to a study published Tuesday in the journal Scientific Reports.

The experiment revived the 28,000-year-old creature’s cells, triggering “signs of biological activity,” according to the researchers.

“[It’s] a significant step towards bringing mammoths back from the dead,” Kei Miyamoto, one of the study’s authors, told the Nikkei Asian Review.

I’m seriously ticked about this. WE do not need these creatures...

Spend the money on keeping elephants and rhinos alive. Highly intelligent animals, they’re killed and killed and killed by imbecilic humans for their tusks and horns. Are “scientists” setting up a new poaching channel, with animals who have major amounts of ivory? Why don’t they just grow test tube ivory?

OTOH, if they could find a way to bring back my beloved grandmother, more power to them.

It could be implanted in an Asian elephant. But do we really want to wait 22 months for a baby mammoth to be born?

If it really happens. I’m not holding my breath waiting for an extinct species to be revived.

Realistically, all the need to do is:
* revive sperm and inseminate a living elephant
* revive cells, revert to stem cell state, create sperm, inseminate an elephant
* revive cells well enough to get DNA to clone it

Sounds rough, a mouse giving birth to a mammoth. Might need an epidural.

As I understand it, carved ivory is banned worldwide - unless it comes from mammoth tusks. After all, mammoths are ALREADY extinct. Nice way to muck up the ivory market, boys.
