Samira Damavandi knows that when she fills out her 2020 census form, she will be counted. But it pains her that, in some way, she will also be forgotten.
When asked to mark her race, Damavandi will encounter options for white, black, Asian, American Indian and Native Hawaiian — but nothing that she believes represents her family’s Iranian heritage. She will either have to choose white, or identify as “some other race.” “It erases the community,” she said.
Roughly 3 million people of Southwest Asian, Middle Eastern or North African descent live in the United States, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. No other county has more of these communities than Los Angeles, where more than 350,000 people can trace their roots to a region that stretches from Mauritania to the mountains of Afghanistan.
In past census surveys, more than 80 percent in this group have called themselves white, The Times analysis found.
Arab and Iranian communities for years have lobbied the bureau to create a separate category for people of Middle Eastern or North African descent.

I fail to see why Race should even be a question. Count noses. That’s about all.
Just go to the paint store, there are many shades of white. If I recollect correctly, these folks are known as sand-white.

2010 Census:
Unless SCOTUS rules otherwise , we need the detail to redistrict. (ie divide Newark, NJ Essex County and Jersey City , Hudson County between Blacks & Hispanics. Dems Sires & Payne)
There is a difference between race and ethnicity.
In the end only a few will have to bear the burden of being called the color white. All the blessed people are called by their geographical origins, except western Europeans. We are stamped with the shame of a boring color that doesn’t even describe our skins.
The correct answer would be “Other Asian”.
Iran is in Asia. She should them put “Iranian” or “Persian”.
Is she really losing sleep over this?

2. Persians should have never allowed some Grand Mufti to change the name of their country to Iran, which literally means “the land of Aryans”

One thing the Mexican Constitution has that we should consider doing.Mexico has no hyphenated Mexicans. They prohibit any reference to race when they conduct a census or issue any means of identification, Where a physical description is needed skin color yes but not by race or nationality or tribal background.By doing this Mexico has avoided “balkanizing”, creating fractional disputes in areas where a given group in one of its states is a majority or a minority. Plus it could play a significant part in shutting the political playing off racial divisions down.
Any time you try to categorize by race, you wind up with anomalies. For example, Spaniards and Portuguese, who are as European as, say, Poles or Scots, may not want to be counted with Latin Americans, nor do Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, etc., regard them as fellow Latinos. Then with the so called MENA description. you have Jews, who are generally descended from the Biblical Jews, as DNA studies have shown. Neither the MENAs nor the Jews are exactly in love with each other.
Or she can move to Iran. Problem solv3d.
