Joaquin Phoenix Wins Best Actor Golden Globe Over Adam Driver as Oscar Battle Heats Up
IndieWire ^ | January 5th, 2020 | Zack Sharf

Joaquin Phoenix has now won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama thanks to his critically acclaimed performance in Todd Phillips’ revisionist comic book movie “Joker.” Believe it or not, the Golden Globe victory is Phoenix’s first major Best Actor win of the 2019-20 awards season outside of smaller critics’ groups. The majority of precursor Best Actor prizes this season have been awarded to Adam Driver of “Marriage Story” or Adam Sandler of “Uncut Gems.” Phoenix was nominated for the Golden Globe awards opposite Driver in “Marriage Story,” Christian Bale in “Ford v. Ferrari,” Jonathan Pryce in “The Two Popes,” and Antonio Banderas in “Pain and Glory.”

Phoenix’s victory for “Joker” gives the actor his second Golden Globe award after taking home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical in 2006 for “Walk the Line,” in which he played Johnny Cash. Phoenix has received additional Golden Globe nominations for his performances in “Gladiator,” “The Master,” “Her,” and “Inherent Vice.”

I thought Joaquin Phoenix was excellent in Gladiator.

I have not seen Joker.

The trailers and ads are everywhere, and my first impression is that the character of Joker was designed for an actor with ultra-amped intensity, like Daniel Day-Lewis.

I'm not a big fan of Daniel Day-Lewis intensity, so I will withhold judgment about Phoenix until I see the whole film - in about two years on basic cable - LOL!

A few years ago there was a thread on FR how he was trying to reinvent himself and start a career in rap music that crashed and burned in spectacular fashion. After a few casual observations in the news on his whereabouts, I never expected to see him turn up alive again.

Mostly because from what I understand, Phoenix went through years of serious drug addiction, severe mental breakdowns and worse. It's amazing that he's come back and ascended so far as to receive the award. If anyone has ever seen or experienced addiction, his tale should be an inspiring hope that people can be brought back into society. Let's hope he stays there.

Yeah.

And this can still be a fun thread because this is the center of the universe of stupid vapid celebrities.

This is what gives us Alec Baldwin, Jane Fonda, and Grets Thunberg. This is where they come from and the people who drive all these awards for playing “lets pretend” drive them.

The whole thing is eminently mockworthy, if nothing else.
And there is indeed nothing else.

Exactly right paradise. To be fair to the broadcast, they HEAVILY edited what he said in that moment. But you could read between the lines and still figure it out.

Wouldn’t say best ever.

Heath Ledger’s, in my view, was much more interesting a depiction. But no doubt, Phoenix’s portrayal was crazy personified.

He, Bale, and McConaughey are probably the big three of American acting right now.

Really want to see it, but can’t bring myself to give DeNiro any of my money.

John Wayne always played himself, as does Jack Nicholson, DeNiro, Tom Hanks and so many others.

DeNiro? He’s a pudgy little douche, not a mafia badass.

Hanks is also a weenie.

This film is high art.

You couldn't prove it by me. I have no intention of seeing it.

No doubt, that being in the cult did not do the man any favors psychologically.

It certainly didn't help his brother.

McConaughey is a great actor. He overdoes it at times, but he’s also not a whackadoodle leftist. I think that’s one reason he moved out of Hollywood and moved to Texas, where he teaches a class on script to screen. He has been married to one woman and as kids and I think in most ways is a good ol boy.

Joker was not a superhero movie. It was a psychodrama. A very good one.

Ledger was awesome as the Joker. Phoenix as well.

Ledger and Phoenix were better than Jared Leto.

Let’s not forget Julian Assange, as well.

Maybe it was the same cult, maybe a different one...was it “the family”? I might be getting my cults mixed up.

Poor River didn’t make it out alive. I wonder how Rain is doing these days.
