A man died in what authorities described as a rocket crash in the desert in Barstow on Saturday afternoon.

The deadly crash was reported just before 2 p.m. on a private property along Highway 247, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in a written statement. "A man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event," the statement said. Medical help was already on-site, but the pilot could not be saved.

Authorities did not identity the pilot pending positive identification by coroner's officials. Witnesses and news reports indicted the launch was an event hosted by local daredevil "Mad" Mike Hughes, an amateur rocket builder intent on proving that the Earth is flat.

There are so many simpler ways to commit suicide.
Why do these nuts need to set up an audience first?
No, I do not have any respect for this loon.

That sucked to see. His endeavor cried out to be made fun of, but that was awful.

He had to know he was doomed.

.......local daredevil "Mad" Mike Hughes, an amateur rocket builder intent on proving that the Earth is flat.

And all he found was that he is flat.

Mad Mike ran out of steam (steam powered rocket).

No one thought to buy him a ticket for a Southwest Airline flight to anywhere so he could take pics out the window.

But with his luck, he would have got a aisle seat.

The TMX report was that the parachute deployed perfectly...but was not attached to anything.

If he was using the same chute he used in the video you posted above...it was pretty tattered anyway. Not sure it would’ve been much help.

My son was traveling westbound on I-15/Hwy 58 through Barstow this afternoon on his way to Tehachapi.....I’ll ask him if he saw the “launch”.

We lived in Barstow for a year...some years ago. It had military, Pacific Gas & Electric and trains. That's it.

It was hottern Hades and half way between L.A. and Vegas.

On one jaunt to L.A. we hit the biggest traffic jam I had ever seen. It STARTED 75 miles east of L.A. ALL the way to the City of the Angels. We turned off the freeway sometime before L.A., had some lunch and returned home to Barstow. I wouldn't be surprised if that traffic jam is STILL there.

Barstow isn’t much to look at, but it is in a potentially strategic spot.

NO question about that. I wondered even back then why there was SO MUCH military out there. It's out in the middle of nowhere but accessible to all of southern California...and THAT is very important.
