As the coronavirus pandemic closes schools, in some cases until September, American children this month met their new English, math, science and homeroom teachers: their iPads and their parents. Classes are going online, if they exist at all. The United States is embarking on a massive, months-long virtual-pedagogy experiment, and it is not likely to end well. Years of research shows that online schooling is ineffective and that students suffer significant learning losses when they have a long break from school. Now theyre getting both, in a hastily arranged mess. And the kids who suffer most from the summer slide are the low-income students, the ones already struggling to keep up.
Schools and teachers are mobilizing to roll out instruction. Many are showing entrepreneurial spirit and creativity, and the ad hoc home-school universe is awash in ideas and resources. District leaders are working long hours, trying their best to serve kids. While larger districts have at times struggled with communication and rollout, some schools and districts are showing a more nimble and collaborative approach. Achievement First, a charter network with schools in multiple states including Rhode Island, has jumped in and offered to share all resources with the Providence Public School District, which is under a state takeover for low performance. And Chiefs for Change, an organization of state and local education leaders, is hosting a virtual forum for school districts to share how they are collaborating with charter schools during this crisis. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, those jurisdictions struggling to support online coursework will catch up and find workarounds for students without access to technology, learning from the more entrepreneurial players.

Glad my kids are home!!!! Their minds can decompress from all the nonsense out yonder.
We home-schooled our youngest when we were moving several times across a year. I didn’t do it for any other reason than it would have been too disruptive to have him start in four different schools. North Carolina is excellent with home schooling.
If anything, our son learned much deeper material than he ever did in school. When he finally re-entered public school, he was far ahead of his peers.
I believe having no school is better, since they are being indoctrinated into liberalism and Anti-Americanism at school.
Schools are terrified that many of these kids wont return because parents will realize the benefits of home education.
Ill mention the same to a couple of my kids, the editorial assistant and the Astronautical Engineer.
Well I am hoping that a few moms in each neighborhood WILL continue to homeschool kids in the entire neighborhood get our kids out of these propaganda production factories!!!
“I hope when the parents find out the kids get the lessons done in 3 hours that theyll raise hell about why the school day is 7 hours long.”
Not far from the truth. Working online my son finishes his work in 2 1/2 hours. He said it was nice not to have to listen to teacher/student Q & A sessions.
Every day they stay home their IQ goes up a couple of points.
Yes. And makes the NEA irrelevant.
Come talk to my kids, One a board certified lawyer, one a CPA, and the third degree from A & M in communications.. All graduatedl Magna Cum Laud. My middle daughter graduated Magna in her masters program my oldest Magna from SMU Law school Magna, and my youngest in her MBA Magna from SMU. Additionally they also attended the music prep school in Nachodoches. Two of the three had senior recitals. They all play piano and violin as well as the oldest plays the cello. I borrowed from my retirement to get them properly educated. I also paid very high school taxes and used not a dimes worth of it in government education schools.
