It’s better than throwing your M$ machine out the window.

Buy a new HD and do the install today.

I've run Linux on my home and work computers for two decades. It gets better all the time. USB and Bluetooth handling is far superior to Windows.

Linux is quite user friendly now, but there are still times I have to resort to the command line. We only have 1 Windows machine in the whole house-- my wife's. Daughter's machine is a Mac (a Unix variant, like Linux is).

Better? In some important ways (liek security) yes, in some ways no-

Have the best of both worlds- dual boot- with windows 7 and linux mint cinnamon edition- linux is my main os- i do nearly everything on it- except play windows only games and photoshop work- which is why i need windows 7- I’ve tried virtual machine on linux to run windows in and use photoshop- but no good- nor is it good for games- even under wine- so i dual boot-

The problem with Windows is all of the Crap attached to it. The stuff that Microshaft uses to make money on your clicks and other stuff.

Code is written for the wrong purposes.

As one of my kids likes to say, “It depends.”

It depends on what you do with your computer.

If you play current video games a lot, the answer is, “no.”

If you work in an office environment, and have to interface with others, and run their Excel macros, the answer is, “no.”

If you just surf the web and send emails, the answer is, “no difference.”

If you are computer science inclined and want to check out a lot of evolving programs, the answer is “probably yes.”

Just my humble opinion.

I have it installed on an 8 year old machine and it runs ten times as fast as a Windows machine. I also installed it on a 9 year old laptop running Windows 7 as a dual-boot computer and it runs MUCH faster than most Windows computers. It comes with Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird which imported all my bookmarks and email seamlessly. Windows is a resource hog. I hate it.

PS running Linux Mint Cinnamon

If not for two pieces of software that requires Windows, I would likely be 100 percent on Ubuntu Linux.

Are apples better than oranges?

Is Mac better than PC?

Not mocking you but better is too broad of a criteria.

Technically Linux is superior,
For organized mind types relate to PC well,
Artistic types like Mac/Apple...

So are you technical, organisational or artistic?

And, just what kinds of things are you desiring this tool to accomplish?

Just wanted to frame your inquiry a bit to help you sort the information.

Heh, in the old days the lower level of the better iteration of Windows then available was OS/2 that had the ugly Windows GUI.

How little things change through the years.

Plus instead of deleting faulty code and replacing it, Windows just leaves the old crap in and stuffs it into thousands of useless files. Windows 3.10 was on six 1.44 MB floppy disks. Windows 10 is on something like six 4.7 GB DVDs.

It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to play Windows based games or if you need certain Windows based software, just goe with a Windows operating system.

If you just want to access the internet, create a few documents and spreadsheets, etc., they you should give Linux a try.

Or set your computer to boot from a thumb drive first, and put Linux on a thumb drive. If you want Linux, start with the thumb drive in, if you want Windows, boot with the thumb drive out.

It used to be that Linux booted a lot faster than Windows, but as Linux packages have gotten bloated, and Windows has actually improved in that area, that’s no longer a reason to swtich. (There are some stripped down Linux packages out there if this is your need, however - see Puppy, for example).

If you haven’t looked there yet, start with Distrowatch - see what is poplular, what comes with the various packages, etc. Some offer an experiece almost identical to Windows, others need a fairly high level of expertiese to make work the way you want.

Libre Office is free and will run Microsoft Excel and Word. I don’t know about the macros, but Libre Office is great.

we inherited a windows 10 laptop recently, and it’s no powerhouse- and is slow as molasses (I’ve scanned for viruses- and the person who had it hardly did anything with it- She didn’t even do email on it- just played games with it really- so not l ikely there is a virus- but who knows)

It really crawls- with the ‘loading’ circle always popping up- it’s a mess- so i put linux on a partition, and use that on the computer now almost exclusively- it’s still slow- but way faster than the windows 10, and doesn’t constantly freeze like windows 10 does on the computer-

Linux makes the laptop usable at least- the only issue is that the wireless modem doesn’t stay connected- whereas the windows one does for the most part- not sure why- the wireless component in the computer is a crappy one- probably that has something to do with it- linux likely doesn’t have a good driver for it or something- I’m not gonna muck with it though-

But yeah- linux saved the computer- don’t understand why companies woudl load windows 10 onto a weak laptop like that (low memory, not a good internal video component- etc- )- the computer just seems not to be able to handle windows 10
