Asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago crashed into Earth at 'the deadliest possible angle' of 60 degrees which maximized production of greenhouse gases

The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs around 66 million years ago crashed into Earth at “the deadliest possible angle”, researchers have concluded.

The giant impacter struck what is today Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula at around 60 degrees — maximizing the production of climate-altering greenhouse gases.

The global disaster caused by the space rock — which was bigger than Mount Everest — was far worse than once thought, Imperial College London experts said.

Previous studies had suggested the asteroid came in at an angle of around 30 degrees, while others concluded that it crashed almost straight down.

However, the team’s computer simulation found that the gradient was bang in the middle of these two values — a fact that was more the worse for ancient life. […]

The asteroid left a 120-mile-wide crater at the disaster zone, vaporizing rock and sending billions of tons of sulfur and carbon dioxide into the prehistoric skies.

All living things within hundreds of miles of the impact site would have been incinerated within minutes.

Meanwhile, the dust cloud generated by the impact would have blocked out the sun — likely triggering a “nuclear winter” and seeing temperatures plunge, acid rain falling from the skies and 75 percent of living species wiped out. …

I’m sure God will be interested to hear from these experts how all of this occurred.

Imperial College. Computer Model. Ummmmmm.

Yes based on a computer model. These researchers want to keep being paid by the UK governments so they start playing fast and loose. And have a good giggle when they get their next Gov't grant.

Same applies to a lot of Global Warming research. The researcher that saw global warming evidenced in ancient tree rings was using a crappy ol rickety program he put together. This was Keith Briffa at the East Anglia University Climate Research Unit. He was as bad a Michael Mann

Personally, I'm glad there are no dinosaurs left romping around.

But that's just me...

"...the deadliest possible angle..."

Yep... Always suspected as much... Always looked at the competing theories and picked a "safe" place somewhere in the middle...

However, I'll need much more grant money to resolve this monumental issue...

Snicker...

Article said, "disaster zone, vaporizing rock and sending billions of tons of sulfur and carbon dioxide into the prehistoric skies"

So called accepted science today is a farce. The massive amount of dust in the stratosphere is what likely cooled the planet.

It's also very likely a large sun flare, Sungrazing comet, near by star Nova debris or comet hitting/blowing up on entry is what ended the glaciation

"What month? What day? What time?"

Scary part is we might know when the last great extinction took place. younger Dryas might have taken place around the time of Halloween or what was called the "day of the dead" which was associated with the end of the world in many cultures from Hindu, south American and European.

Plants need light, CO2, water, and decayed matter. Tske away one and bacteria takes over.

No mention of the other two gigantic asteroids that hit about the same time or the Siberian Traps. Flawed study meant to boost climate change hoax.

Let’s see, when I was in grade school there was another ice age coming. Then that changed to global warming. Now it’s climate change. I’m wondering, can they tell us what the weather is going to be like tomorrow?

I just need science to come to a conclusion on whether and egg is good for me or not. That opinion seems to change every three years or so.

About ten years ago, tropical oils were the devil. Now coconut oil is a miracle drug.

If you can’t tell, I trust scientists about as far as I can throw them.

Liberals know people aren’t buying the global warming scam anymore and their fishing around for the next big scare tactic.

This one - the asteroid bit - won’t work.

It’s been over 12,000 years since the last relatively large hit... and it’s unlikely they can convince enough fools the next hit is within the next 50 years.

This is use a computer model to find the worst case scenario that produces the most debris into the atmosphere possible, with maximizing size of asteroid, optimal velocity, and perfect impact angle, then declare that’s exactly what happened. It’s called scientific nose picking!

Little known fact...One of the dinosaurs was named "Hillary", and Hillary Clinton was named after her...

Yes, you’re right. It’s a dinosaur that destroyed everything it touched, and it was so large it required helper dinosaurs to keep it from falling over. It kept stumbling over Scandalsauruses. It’s favorite food was the rare Bimbosaurarus, which it hunted voraciously in Jurassic Trailer Parks, but preferred the carrion of the female Bimbosaurarus after her mate, the Billidontknowwhatisisaurus, had had his fill. It was called the Hillariousaurus.
