Weekly Garden Thread - September 5-11, 2020
September 5, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 09/05/2020 7:02:44 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

A refreshing treat on a hot summer day. Add this to your MUST MAKE summer recipe file.
BTW, I noticed some farmer's markets are still selling watermelons.

ING 3 cups watermelon cubes frozen overnight 3/4 cup cream of coconut 2 tbsp lime juice

METHOD Blender smooth frozen watermelon, cream of coconut, lime juice (or processor).

Serve immediately, or transfer to ice cream container and freezer for later.

Then there is always duct tape!

This spring, in the woods to the east of our garden, several hundred feet further “out”, I found a big loose snarl, about 3 ft. across, of some sort of nearly rust-proof (but I don’t think it’s stainless - I could be wrong) 16 ga. (approx.) steel wire. It had been cut in a few places. It has to be 30+ years old. I set my daughter to work helping me untangle it. Half the snarl is still a snarl, with several long ends hanging out, now, but, I have used over 100 ft. of it this summer for various “attachments”, plant support and supports, etc., and I probably have at least 50 ft. more in 4 modest “bundles”.

One man’s trash...

Yet another question!

In thinking about how to care for plants without wetting the leaves, using powder pesticide, fungicide, etc., if absolutely necessary, I recalled this old tool being at my parents:

(Finding this on the web without even the brand name to start with was not easy!)

So I asked my Mom if she remembered it, and to my amazement, she not only remembered it, but suggested it's approx. location @ her place, and that I just take it, as she has no use for it anymore. (These days, Mom's #1 concern is getting to the restroom in time. I suppose that's not too many more years away for me, too.)

But, in the meantime... The duster looks better than the above - likely was barely used, but was badly locked up, though no rust is evident. Generous application of penetrating oil got it cranking again, but:

1) I need to somehow wash the penetrating oil residue out of the interior of the duster where the powder is stored or passes through. Just use Dawn detergent and let dry, then maybe oil the shafts' areas lightly?

2) I think the "gearbox" needs new grease. It definitely "feels" like it. This is another likely 30+ year old item. The gearbox appears to be accessible, but to do so, the bottom assembly needs to slide out, and a small spinner in the top section that holds the "dust" & connects to the gearbox must be removed. The screw holding that spinner on won't budge. By any extreme "longshot", has anyone here ever disassembled one of these successfully and can offer advice?

Thanks!

“Hudson Gold-Crank Flower-Plant-Duster/Sprayer.”

Mine has a short extension on the outlet pipe, said extension not seen in the pic above.

Flashlight deployed in Opo section of garden. No moths seen, tho’ many other small insects are flying around. Including plenty of mosquitos. Dang - who wants to put on repellent, at home, at 10 pm!

3 of the “high” female flowers completely fell off, two others look like they may be developing, one is newly open. So, I sacrificed a male flower that blossomed at a low ht., tonight, to manually pollinate the new female flower. Many new flowers are budding. I’d estimate at least 90% are male. I wish I knew how much flowering was normal for Opo.

😁 like the sign that says "we are houseplants with complicated emotions". Do you know where to buy a nice birdbath around here? I haven't been to Bruce Company yet. Wild Birds Unlimited says they are closed due to Kung Flu fear. I got my old bath there 25 years ago but left it for the birds when I sold my house 2 years ago. I found a quality USA company online that sells on Amazon. But would rather buy local and haul it home. Looking for a reinforced poured cement or stone birdbath. Thanks!

Any of the Jung Garden Centers should be able to help. Bruce Company is nice; they’ve really classed up the place through the years. Their Christmas decor displays in the past were worth the trip to see.

Also - check out Klein’s on East Washington in Madison, or maybe Stoughton Garden Center? They’re pretty nice, too.

Cool find! When my FIL passed, he left me his Corn Planter and his Black Walnut huller!

Such a shame! What’s the cause of all the fires this season? Drought, again? Restless natives? Improper care of woodlands? All of the above?

Diana...

On the other side of the garden wall there are unconfirmed indications that—as well as natural causes like lightning—roving bands of Antifa firebugs have been busy.

Interesting article regarding research into corn variety that has aerial roots that fix nitrogen from the air!

We had a freak lightening storm pass through that started several fires due to the dry conditions..

Great ideas! I forgot about Klein’s. I looked in New Glarus at Brenda’s Bloomenladen a few days ago. I think the Solid Rock Stoneworks brand I found on Amazon is about half the price of similar quality in a retail store ( going by what I saw at Brenda’s).

The Gardening thread is a fun read. Thanks for hosting it!
