No one was as cheap as my Lebanese father; I remember him getting steamed if he thought a waiter was extra friendly. He was certain the server was trying to butter him up for a bigger tip.
I did several weeks worth of Doord@sh delivery in my retirement. I’m the kind of person that tries to work a system to maximize its benefits. That means I was obsessed with figuring out how to make the most out of Doord@sh, figuring out the best times and areas to work and the worst areas and restaurants/businesses to avoid. I had never before worked where tips were the better part of my income so I was surprised to discover that the alleged low or no black tipping reputation, with exceptions, was largely true.
Very funny though when I accidentally accepted a delivery in a very bad neighborhood. The pre-delivery listed tip was better than average but the kicker was the thuggish looking customer pulled out a roll of cash and peeled off a 20 dollar bill insisting I take it for his small Taco Bell order.
FYI, the best Doord@ash income source in general was from bigger restaurants. The worst from stores (because of low or no tips and time lost to long waits for many bags of groceries at Walmart and lost time for actual shopping for multiple items at Walgreens with low or no tips). Also, if you’re not afraid of driving in snow, tips were huge during storms! The general goal was the most deliveries per hour while declining the least profitable.
Exactly what I was thinking. It’s not racist if past experience tells you that you will receive less compensation from certain types of people. It simply means that you will expend your energy on better compensation from other sources.
Perhaps people in the black community need to start tipping more if they want better service? If this is a problem, then start spreading the knowledge that tipping more will equal better service.
I have discovered that when I’ve dined in the same restaurant on different days I will get better service when I am dressed nice. Is that racist or learned behavior?
How about your then pulling out an agreement for THEM to sign, stating that they would not sue/fire you?

“Worked as a bar tender years ago.”
My policy is to pay and tip the bartender well for the 1st drink when I plan on an extended stay. I always get great service and an offer to run a tab for the rest of the bender.
Re: 95 - Your posts are not the problem.
When seeing words such as “They”, “Them”, etc used in the context they are, it’s unfortunate.
It just demonstrated that FR will be hard pressed to attract a lot of non-white conservatives / Republicans / libertarians based in part on some of the attitudes shown by the comments on this thread.
Like I said, I believe Presidents Reagan and Trump would be disgusted by many of the comments on this thread. They don’t help retake the House or the Senate or fix election fraud.
These kinds of people have no business dining out -
Isn’t it a self-fulfilling prophecy? If you give Black customers a lower level of service because you think they’re going to tip less then why be surprised if they tip less because they got a lower level of service?
Careful with that logic on this thread. It goes against the thread groupthink.
Always have been a contrarian.
I worked at 3 different restaurants in the deep south for over 5 years. The best tippers were whites, orientals, and Hispanics. East Asians were next. Lowest tippers were American born blacks. (Blacks that were clearly not from the USA tipped much better.)
At the last place I worked (for 2 1/2 years) about 1/3rd of the wait staff was black and they were actually the ones that complained about black tippers the most.
I think it has now become a self-perpetuating thing as since most servers expect lower tips from blacks they do lower their service quality. <— This does not mean that if the service was top notch the tips would be up to par, just that some servers provide poorer service when they expect smaller tips. This also happens when the customer is white but looks like a redneck.
Personally I was waiting tables to make as much money as possible - so even when I got a table of black women (yes worst tippers) I would give them the same service. By doing so - even if they normally tipped my co-workers 5% for poor service maybe they'd tip me 10%. And I believe it did.
When I started at working at one of the restaurants - a southern Mexican chain - there was an elderly black couple that came in twice a week always asking for extra corn tortillas, salsa, and pico de gallo. They would order 2 drinks plus 1 entree and 1 extra enchilada and split everything. They also took an hour to eat when our normal turnover was around 40-45 minutes. Total bill was always something like $12.05 and they always left $13. Every other waiter always complained if they for this couple in their section.
First time I got them in my section I treated them the same as every other customer and they even chatted with me a little bit. Boom - they left me $14. Next time they came in they actually asked to be seated in my section. Again I gave them great service and they left me $14. Since they asked for me, I added them to my ‘regular’ list - a set of notes on my regulars and what they usually ordered, etc.
Third time they came in - once they sat down - within a minute I greeted them complete with their usual drinks, extra tortillas, salsa, and pico de gallo and asked them if they wanted their usual - which they replied “Yes”. less than 10 minutes later I served their food - including splitting it onto 2 plates they way they usually did. Big smiles from them. 25 minutes later they were done, left $20 on the table and told the manager on the way out that I was the best waiter they ever had.
After that I saw them twice a week for the a couple years and got a $7.95 tip on 1 $12.05 ticket each time.
I hear you. I do think there are some genuine racists on FR. Few. But it’s regrettable.
It was embarrassing.
When I waited tables in college everyone at the place hated waiting on black people because they never tipped well, if at all. Even the BLACK waitresses hated waiting on black customers!
There was a black family that would come in and tipped very well - I would go out of my way to get them in my area. I saw them coming in once and asked the black hostess to sit them in my area. She was shocked that I wanted them because she knew full well that black people didn’t tip well!
Was it a racist thing for me to not want to bust my butt for a nickel? Nope. It was a “I need this money to get thru college” thing! Was it racist for the black waitresses to not want to have black customers for the same reason?
To black waiters or waitresses I give regular tips 15% . Not leaving tip is my style
xxxxxxx
For good service? You are an jerk.
