Winter Survival Gear For Your Car

As you travel during the winter months, consider the important survival gear items to keep in your car. Your literal survival may even depend on it

Example: Stranded on the highway, stuck in a major snow storm or ice storm, along with everyone else. The cars are running out of gas. No heat. Now what? Hypothermia sets in…

Here’s a real world example that is occurring as I post this article: “Never Seen Anything Like It” – Drivers Trapped On Virginia Interstate Since Monday

The fact is, we’re not always dressed appropriately for an emergency when we hop in the car to go somewhere during the winter. We assume that everything will be alright. During the winter, it’s especially important to have adequate warm clothing and protection form the elements. Even if you’re not wearing them, it is highly advisable to keep a separate dedicated set of cold-weather gear in the car (e.g. an extra jacket is better there than hanging in your closet at home).

Here are a few ideas to consider: List Of Winter Survival Gear For Your Car

The list for the sane driving a vehicle using fossil fuel. If driving an electric vehicle, just bend over and kiss your posterior goodbye.

I have to say, I didn’t see a survival blanket. I have one those, they don’t take up much space.

Laugh at my machetes, now.

Actually the ICE car takes much more energy to keep you warm when stranded.

The EV has a giant battery to keep your posterior warm.

Just find a kind stranger with a gas car and huddle for warmth.

Take an empty coffee can. Fill it about half way with kitty litter. Add a large Dollar Store candle to the can. Replace the lid.

Light, heat, and litter all in one convenient package.

I always make sure the wife has her insulated overalls, a down jacket, winter hat and gloves and a moving blanket in her car. There’s almost always a bottle of water floating around in there somewhere. We keep a flashlight in the glovebox.

When I go out in winter, I just grab all the same to take with me if I’m not already wearing.

Heater drains @15 amps. As an EV owner, I try REALLY hard to avoid using the heater.

Danger of Carbon Monoxide In Your Vehicle
If stranded in your vehicle in deep snow, while the engine is running (for warmth) you MUST keep your vehicle’s exhaust pipe clear of accumulating snow or you will suffer (or die) from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Running a gasoline car just for heat is a waste.

Electric seats and a blanket.

Good info, and timely. Since my kids were little, I’ve always kept a fleece blanket in the car, along with a few other items. After reading this, I realize I can up my game a little bit.

Wool blanket is better then a survival blanket.

A survival blanket is ok when you have to worry about weight or space. I carry one in my "oops kit" when I go for a day in the woods. But wool is much better.

When lived north of the border I learned to always be prepared for foul weather and dangerous situations on the road — including WINTER weather in the SUMMER months.

The warm clothing part was easy. I used to attend NFL games in a place where December and January weather could be awful, so I simply packed my “January playoff game” outfit in my vehicle and kept it there through the winter.

Or you could just have an unwoke department of transportation that actually clears snow off major highways during snow storms. Note that this leads to salt poisoning of the oceans and running snowplows adds to green house gas buildup.

Don’t forget a good handgun and ammo to fend off the hordes of electric vehicle folks trying to cash in on your warm gas car.
