In 1911, when the White American historian and explorer, Hiram Bingham, was first led to the ancient Incan ruins, he asked a local landowner to write down the name of the site in his field journal.

Seems that “Pichhu” means “peak”.

That in itself would make me question the “town” name.

Granted it’s IDed by what “peak” it’s near, but maybe someone could’ve come up with a non-peak name.

As it is, “Huayna” looks worse than “Machu”, and probably sounds worse, too!

I used to think it was called Macho Grande.

If no one has complained about the name for 100 years, is there really a problem?

I heard they got the name ‘Machu Picchu’ when they asked a local guide the name of the place and just as he was staring to answer, he sneezed. The rest is history.
