Many years ago, I worked on the tarmac. It was one of my first jobs, and I was still in school. They stressed the importance of staying away from those engines and being constantly alert to the presence of FOD.

I worked for Hudson General at the International Terminal (E) at Logan. So El Al was one of the airlines I worked. Even then, they had soldiers with machine guns under each wing while the plane was parked there.

In addition to baggage, I did lavs, water, and mail runs.

I was doing lavs for Air Portugal one afternoon and did not tighten the hose properly. Air Portugal - of all airlines to do that with! I was drenched in raw sewage. Had to take a chemical shower, discard all my clothing and wear a baby blue paper "nightgown" until Hudson was able to get me a new uniform.

That was not a good day. But overall, I really liked the job.

Oh my goodness, I saw this article elsewhere and did not realize this had happened AGAIN.

That Dec, 2022 incident has been in the news (probably because a law suit was filed, but not sure). So I thought this was an article about that.

The poor person, may G-d rest their soul.

Spinning props are lethal as well. Years ago when I was an airport operations intern, I was talking to one of the older, experienced line guys at one of the FBOs. He was telling me stories about some of the crazy things he had experienced, and told me about one time when he was guiding a King Air in to park on the ramp. It was a cold winter night, and the pavement was icy. As the aircraft got close to him he slipped and fell flat on his back, right in the path of the left engine. The aircraft moved a few more feet forward and stopped, with the prop spinning right above him. He said he just tried to lay perfectly still until they shut down the engine. Had to be really hairy, because I don’t think that prop clears the ground by more than maybe 3 or 4 feet. He said the crew didn’t know that he had fallen (not that they could have done much anyway).

Of course, many people have accidentally walked into props, with fatal results. If you’re not paying attention, they can be harder to see than a jet engine with a visible nacelle.

Hard to put anti-personnel screens on operational aircraft that are taxiing to and from runways.

Dang! 😱 I’ll bet you always made sure that hose was tight after that. That’s brutal.

It’s a total coincidence that last night, we watched Clint Eastwood’s 2016 movie “Sully” with Tom Hanks about birds flying into jet engine near NYC. They landed the disabled jet in the Hudson River, but the movie concentrated more on the question if the decision to land in the Hudson instead of the airport was a wise decision by Sully. Based on a true story, it’s a great movie.

Hemingway was stopped from deliberately walking into a prop, near the end. They stopped him from trying to jump from a small plane, as well. He was traveling a lot, to and from the Mayo Clinic for electro-shock therapy.
