“I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the six-hundred-sixty-fifth day of the war.

Day 665: Dec 20

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Chasiv Yar direction.

Since Russian forces launched their series of offensive operations, Chasiv Yar became one of their 5 main targets for the winter campaign. Chasiv Yar is a small town with a pre-war population of 12 thousand people, and it is located less than 5 kilometers away from Bakhmut.

Over the last months, Ukrainians were trying to undercut Russian forces in Bakhmut from the south and put them into an operational encirclement. During the whole campaign, Ukrainians advanced by 7 to 10 kilometers, and once the fighting reached the railway embankment, the Ukrainian progress stalled. Ukrainian fighters from the 3rd Assault Brigade reported that the main reason was that Russians deployed several divisions’ worth of troops to prevent the front line from further collapse. So, Russian waves of counterattacks were never-ending, making it very difficult to maintain the momentum, especially in the face of the additional barrier in the form of the railway embankment. In fact, an officer from the 26th Artillery Brigade reported that the number of Russian troops in the Bakhmut area recently reached 80 thousand troops. For context, this is as many as during the peak heat of the Battle for Bakhmut and twice as many as Russians had allocated for the Avdiivka offensive that is happening right now.

As the Russian offensive in Avdiivka is failing, Russian forces started increasing the number of attacks in this region instead. Moreover, a fighter from the 24th Assault Brigade reported that several days ago, Russians deployed the best-equipped motorized rifle detachments to Bakhmut, as those troops have the most modern tanks, armored fighting vehicles, radios, and other equipment. Taking all of that into consideration, it becomes obvious that Russians would launch another offensive.

Since Ukrainian forces were actively operating south of Bakhmut, Russians decided to launch their first attacks from the north. The first target of the Russian forces became Bohdanivka. Geolocated footage shows how Russians were shelling this village extensively. Ukrainian fighters reported that some trenches were shelled so heavily that the soil was basically plowed and the positions completely destroyed. Nonetheless, Russian forces did not manage to get a foothold in the region.

If we look at the topographic map, we can see that the village is located in lowlands – right in between two hills. Such a setting makes the defense of the village much easier as long as Ukrainians control the hills. That is why Russian forces increased the intensity of their attacks from Yahidne along the ridge. Russian sources released a video showing how they are using North Korean so-called golf cars to quickly deploy new assault units across the field. Russians also intensified their operations north of Bohdanivka because without these positions, taking Bohdanivka is virtually impossible. So far, Russians managed to improve their tactical position south of Bohadanivka, while all Russian attacks north of Bohdanivka have been repelled.

Soon, Russian forces also shifted their focus to the southern flank because here, Russians are lagging behind and have to retake all tactical heights that they lost during the Ukrainian counteroffensive. The main direction of their attack became the strong point north of Klishchiivka. In order to achieve it, the Russians are leveraging the forest that connects Klishchiicka and Bakhmut. This is a very smart move because this way, Russians avoid the need to attack across the rails and, if successful, can automatically recapture Klishchiivka.

Geolocated footage shows extensive Russian artillery preparations on the main Ukrainian strong point on the hill. This is the place of the most intense clashes right now, as Russians took half of the strong point north of the road while Ukrainians are holding the half that is south of the road. Simultaneously, intense clashes are happening in the so-called forest appendix. The freshest updates suggest that Russians reduced the number of attacks here, meaning that Ukrainians stabilized the front line in this sector.

Interestingly, Ukrainians fighters reported that after capturing some of the Russian fighters from the Strorm-V detachment, they discovered that these were Wagner forces.”

People are all different – as individuals and as representatives of their communities and cultures. Yet, we all hold in our hearts a respect for life, for those we spend our daily life with, and we all strive to feel that our hearts are united – united by peace. And such unity is truly felt when we are sincere, when we do not betray our souls, and when we boldly stand up for life. These are always special moments – when the different feel that they are not apart, and when even opponents are united by the brightest in people, when prayer unites.

I am glad that Kyiv is one of those capitals where freedom reigns and people can freely practice their faith. I am proud of all those who defend our freedom and, despite all the power of Russian evil, prove that our united strength is more effective. And I thank all those whose prayers in this pre-Christmas period will echo with one plea – a plea for victory. For the victory of the human soul over aggression. For the victory of our unity over any self-serving interests that might divide us. And for the victory of Ukraine – over the evil that has come to our land and must be expelled.

Day 665 of the Russian full-scale military aggression against Ukraine continues.

The enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, launches strikes, and shells both military and civilian targets.

During the day of December 20, there were 89 combat engagements. The enemy launched 5 missile and 31 air strikes, 53 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the Russian terrorist attacks have wounded civilians. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.

The operational situation in the east and the south of Ukraine remains difficult.

VOLYN and POLISSYA AXIS: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of Belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.

SIVERSHCHYNA and SLOBOZHANSHCHYNA AXIS: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of Russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of Russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. Around 20 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Karpovychi (Chernihiv oblast), Khotin, Kostyantynivka, Volfyne (Sumy oblast), Veterynarne, Vovchansk, Budarky (Kharkiv oblast).

KUPYANSK AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 16 attacks in the vicinity of Synkivka east of Petropavlivka and Ivanivka (Kharkiv oblast). In that area, the enemy used air support in attempts to break through the defenses of Ukrainian troops. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).

LYMAN AXIS: the Ukrainian soldiers repelled 12 enemy attacks in the vicinity of Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), east of Terny and Spirne (Donetsk oblast). The invaders launched an air strike in the area of Serebryanske forestry (Luhansk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10 settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Serebryanka, Verkhniokamyanske, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).

BAKHMUT AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 6 attacks of the adversary near Bohdanivka, Klishchiyivka, and Andriyivka (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka, Andriyivka (Donetsk oblast).

AVDIYIVKA AXIS: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 13 enemy attacks east of Novobakhmutivka, Avdiyivka, and 18 more attacks in the vicinities of Sjeverne, Pervomaiske and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast). The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Novobakhmutivka, Berdychi, Avdiyivka, Sjeverne, Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast).

MARYINKA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinities of Maryinka, Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the adversary, with air support, launched 9
unsuccessful attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders. The settlements of Heorhiyivka, Maryinka, Novomykhailivka, Pobjeda were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.

SHAKHTARSKE AXIS: the enemy did not conduct any offensive (assault) operations. The adversary fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva (Donetsk oblast).

ZAPORIZHZHIA AXIS: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 4 adversary attacks west of Verbove and south of Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). In that area, the adversary made attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. Around 20 settlements, including Poltavka, Malynivka, Hulyaipole, Huliaipilske, Kamyanske (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.

KHERSON AXIS: the adversary fired artillery at the city of Kherson (Kherson oblast), and Dniprovske, Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast). Also, the invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Krynky (Kherson oblast).

The enemy did not abandon its intention to drive our units from the left bank of the Dnipro, made 29 failed assaults. The attacks were repelled and the enemy retreated having suffered major losses. The Ukrainian troops are holding the line, continuing to retain their positions and firing for effect on the enemy.

During the day of December 20, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 16 concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment, and 1 strike on an air defense system of the adversary. The air defense forces shot down 1 Kh-59 guided missile.

The Ukrainian missile troops hit 2 concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment, 6 artillery systems of the Russian invaders.

The wife of the President of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, held the wrap-up online meeting of 2023 with the participants of the First Ladies and Gentlemen Summit.

The meeting was joined by Bo Tengberg, husband of the Prime Minister of Denmark, Sirje Karis, First Lady of Estonia, Eliza Reid, First Lady of Iceland, María Begoña Gómez Fernández, wife of the President of the Government of Spain, Tamara Vučić, First Lady of Serbia, Juraj Rizman, partner of the President of Slovakia, Aleš Musar, husband of the President of Slovenia, Eva Pavlová, First Lady of the Czech Republic, and Amelie Derbaudrenghien, wife of the President of the European Council.

The Annual Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen was founded in 2021 by Olena Zelenska to bring together the spouses of state leaders to create an international platform for sharing experiences and implementing joint projects for the well-being of people around the world.

The theme of the FIRST Summit, which took place in 2021, was “Soft Power in the New Reality”. Its goal was to strengthen the influence of first ladies and gentlemen in overcoming global humanitarian challenges.

The SECOND Summit (2022), titled “Ukraine and the World: The Future We (Re)Build Together”, focused on the impact of Russian aggression against Ukraine and placed emphasis on the human aspect. On the sidelines of the Summit, $6.4 million was raised to purchase 92 ambulances for Ukraine.

The THIRD Summit “Mental Health: Fragility and Resilience of the Future” (2023) touched upon the topic of psychological resilience in the face of challenges and cataclysms in Ukraine and the world. The event was joined by 29 participants either in person or via video link. On the sidelines of the event, there was a presentation of an international sociological study on mental health and attitudes towards it in different countries. The survey was conducted in 11 countries: Argentina, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Israel, Germany, Poland, the USA, Türkiye, Ukraine, Croatia, and Japan. The research, commissioned by the Summit, was conducted by the British company Alligators Digital. Expert support was provided by the Coordination Center for Mental Health under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Brand Ukraine, and the NGO “Barrier-Free”.

Respondents in these countries said, in particular, that they felt the influence of the war on their mental health.

In addition, 25 memoranda of medical partnership were signed during the third Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen. Medical institutions in France, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, and North Macedonia, as well as leading hospitals in Poland, Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Sweden, Spain, Canada, Israel, and the Netherlands became twinned with Ukrainian hospitals.

The Ukrainian partners were medical institutions from Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Lviv, Ternopil, Vinnytsia, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Zakarpattia regions.

During the wrap-up meeting, Olena Zelenska welcomed the first gentlemen from Slovakia, Slovenia and Denmark who joined the community this year and thanked them for their cooperation and support for Ukraine in the face of full-scale Russian aggression.

The first ladies and gentlemen shared the results of their work in 2023 and plans for the next year.

For example, the husband of the Prime Minister of Denmark, Bo Tengberg, is working on a documentary series about the impact of the war on Mykolaiv and its residents, as well as the reconstruction of the city.

First Lady of Estonia Sirje Karis shared the results of Estonia’s cooperation with Zhytomyr region and spoke about the interaction with the Olena Zelenska Foundation.

First Lady of Iceland Eliza Reid spoke about the results of the Global Women’s Leadership Forum. The wife of the Prime Minister of Spain, María Begoña Gómez Fernández, emphasized the active work of the embassies of Ukraine and Spain to facilitate the integration of Ukrainian children into Spanish society and spoke about the cooperation of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Defense in training Ukrainian doctors in the fields of amputations and rehabilitation.

The First Lady of Serbia, Tamara Vučić, shared the results of her active work in promoting and preserving cultural heritage and invited her colleagues to participate in a related festival.

The partner of the President of Slovakia, Juraj Rizman, said that participation in the third Summit helped him launch projects on the importance of mental health in Slovakia and emphasized that he was actively promoting the topic of cooperation with Ukraine in society.

The husband of the President of Slovenia, Aleš Musar, informed that the first stage of training Ukrainian trainers in Moldova in providing psychosocial assistance to children had been completed and thanked the Ukrainian rescuers for their help in eliminating the consequences of the flood in Rečica ob Savinji.

The spouse of the President of the European Council, Amelie Derbaudrenghien, congratulated Ukraine on a new stage on its way to joining the EU and emphasized the need to continue providing assistance and support to our country.

Olena Zelenska presented an updated vision for the development of the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen as a global platform.

“Since the invasion of Ukraine began, the Summit participants have been working to help both Ukraine and the world fight Russian aggression and its global consequences. Today, I see that the Summit’s platform, which operates continuously, is ready to respond to the humanitarian challenges of today. We can say that this is our updated mission. And, as we have already found out, the challenges facing all people of the world are very similar. It is no coincidence that when we studied mental health this year, we particularly explored the “formula of resilience” that helps Ukraine to hold on and that can be learned by others. And I think our Summit has already found it – in interaction, shared values and helping those in need,” the President’s wife said.
