Earth shoes, love beads, and patchouli?

Patchouli is a scented oil beloved of hippie chicks ... along with love beads and earth shoes. It stinks, IMO.

I picture the mother who accosted you as having been a hippie.

Perhaps I was being a little too obscure?

The language alone in my 1965 Army would cause the vapors in 90% of our congress.

I honestly, subconsciously asked my brother at the kitchen table to pass the f'n salt . . . the family froze !

You bring up a good point, raises a question to which I don’t know the answer: Is it the patchouli I find repulsive, or the combination of patchouli and BO? Not sure I’ve ever smelled it NOT in the context of an unwashed hippie ...

Whenever I'm out and about and run into an old Marine proudly wearing his USMC hat, I'll say to him, "Hey Marine, Semper Fi from an old Army guy!"

I usually get a wave and a smile. (No middle-fingers yet 😁)

A cousin was drafted into the army. On showing up and being put on a bus, had a Marine recruiter or DI come on the bus and pick out several including my cousin.

Drafted into the USMC.

We had a few in the platoon replacing us at MCRD and I pitied the crap they would get. Being drafted had to suck, and then have to go through Marine bootcamp?

"MCRD San Diego August 25 IIRC."

I got on the bus on June 29th, almost 2 months ahead of you - Plt 148 MCRD San Diego> Our Senior DI was SSgt Trujillo, a real sadist who was busted to Lance Corporal soon after.

I was in Vietnam and then the hospital for a while, so I sort of missed out of some of the weirdness. That was a really insane time, wasn’t it?

"I honestly, subconsciously asked my brother at the kitchen table to pass the f'n salt . . . the family froze !"

A similar situation happened to me - when I got back for my Extension Leave from Vietnam, my three year old little sister wandered through our family home (second to last of my nine siblings) sayin "F___ you, F__ you" - I said "who the F___ taught her that"? and the rest of my family just stared at me...
