Republicans, Democrats see Asian Americans as key to victory in Southern California

FULLERTON, California (CNN) -- In a suburban enclave on the outskirts of Los Angeles, Republican Young Kim, a South Korean immigrant, is running to replace retiring Rep. Ed Royce.

Kim's candidacy is years in the making for Republicans' efforts in the Los Angeles area to deepen bonds with the Asian-American community and encourage people like her to run for office.

But that effort hit a wall in 2016.

Asian-Americans, who have tended to vote for Republicans on the local level in Southern California, went for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the area and nationally.

Now, ahead of Tuesday's primary, Democrats and Republicans in the jumbled congressional race that will feature 17 candidates on the ballot view Asian-American voters as a key demographic in their path to victory.

Kim, who spent Wednesday afternoon knocking on doors here in Fullerton, said the split between national and local offices can be explained by national Republicans focusing too much and too harshly on immigration, a comment that signals her complicated relationship with the President.

"The message is important, but I think the messengers are just as important," said Kim, who explained that Republicans win with Asian voters when they argue they are trying to support legal immigration while discouraging those who come to the country illegally. "Whenever Republicans talk about immigration, people immediately think it is the part of anti-immigrant messaging. It is not."(continued)

Well somewhat.

I come from a farming family ... I’m the only one who left Ventura County. Farmers are largely in Central CA and are very Republican, As was my family. Farmers overall are Conservative and California has lots of farmers! But, they have been overwhelmed by Hispanics everywhere ... esp urban areas.

To the south of L.A. is Orange County. It used to be all Republican, mainly white and Asian but not anymore. Fewer whites and many Asians who are turning Democrat. This was addressed by Tucker Carlson lately that Dems are targeting Asians big time as they have money and are often conservative ... but that is changing.

There is NO ... repeat NO Republican presence in the state. Why is the national Republican Party not stepping in?

California has inaugurated a new non-partisan voting system.

This has resulted in 17 candidates running for the congressional seat Republican Young Kim is trying to win.

Since most of the other 16 candidates are most likely Democrats, including African-Americans, Hispanics, Greens, white liberals, feminists, and other creatures from the Liberal black lagoon, a Republican has an excellent chance of winning.

This new non-partisan voting system favors Republicans not only because it splits the Democratic vote, but also because it makes it harder for the large number of simple-minded Democratic voters to understand what’s going on. Even Maxine Waters might lose her job this year.

Cindy “Peacecreep” Sheehan came very close to knocking off Nancy Pelosi, which is why you don’t read about it.

The Republicans don’t care about CA anymore than they care about NY or NJ! They’ve got theirs and we can go to hell. And, yes, many poor Asians are coming to this country and they will vote Dem for the freebies.

California, to me, was a paradise. Still a most beautiful state but being destroyed. I have sympathy for you.

If Trump had run against Obama he would have adjusted his campaign accordingly and beaten him - if not in 2008, then at least in 2012. Trump would not have been restrained like GOPetards McCain and Romney.

I was under the impression that 90 percent or more of the CA Asians are in the hip pocket of the Democrats. Maybe it’s just 70 percent.

Thank you for your sympathy as I can use it sometimes.
I clearly do not live in a state due to its politics. But I have looked and I keep saying “I hate humidity, I hate snow”. I did not grow up with those things.

Every once in awhile Randy Newman’s lyrics resonate:

Cause the sun is shining all the time
Looks like another perfect day
I love L.A.

They used to be heavily Republican ... I’m 70 years old. :)

Tucker Carllson recently did a show on how the Dems have targeted flipping Asians who are pro-family, have money and used to be conservatives,

”Whenever Republicans talk about immigration, people immediately think it is the part of anti-immigrant messaging. It is not." No shit Sherlock. This is because the Stupid Party is piss-poor communicating to the public. These jerk mumble the word “illegal” in stead of speaking up with the term, ILLEGAL!

Furthermore, the Gutless Old Party, like everything else, refuses to challenge the dems on anything. Instead they sit on their hands.

It’s pathetic.

Sorry, it never works that way. There are seven of the 17 candidates identified as Republican and they will split th 40% of the electorate. We will be very lucky if one of them makes top two.

What I'd really like to see is the CAGOP select its candidates at off year conventions. Only the selected candidate files to run as a Republican. Throw anyone else that files for the primary out of the party.

As Asian American outside ca I have no sympathy towards Asians in ca. They harvest what they sow. For decades they voted for democrats. Now democrats have full power and you Asian realize now they are not for Asians ?

I’ve read that 70% of Asians voted for Obama, twice.

Bad times for Republicans. Bad Republican candidates.

Asians in the more urban and populous states, I think, voted the way their states voted, and since so many live in HI, CA, NY, NJ, MA, MD, they voted Democrat.

In previous elections, the Asian vote wasn’t so heavily Democrat.

I agree with your points for most part...I don’t think that McCain and Romney were great candidates...

Many Asian-Americans voted for Obama because they were so excited about a president, who was not a white male...Many of them felt some kind of obligation to support a “minority” candidate for Presidency...

John Chiang, a Chinese-American, is running for CA governor...No, I don’t think he will do better than his two Democratic rivals...Newsom and Villaraigosa...
I saw an ad on TV for Chiang...In that ad, Chiang stated that he will resist President Trump...
I think many Asian-American voters will vote for him based on his last name...Even some Asian-Americans who are registered Republicans...

Let me go out on a limb to say the Republican Party has split between religious and anti-abortion folks and religious/non-religious and pro-choice folks.

California coast is not the same as inland. Urban Republicans tend toward Laissez-Faire, small government no longer heralded by party brass. R’s could take back the blue coastal states by emphasizing smaller government, anti-socialist views and recognize they will never win again without the former R Independents like me. I know this is not going to be a popular viewpoint here but as someone who grew up urban Dem, moved to a rural county and voted for Ford, not Reagan, I feel the party left me.

Before Reagan, the party did not make private matters such as belief in God or abortion a litmus test. Republican Pols on the West Coast no longer fit the mold of a Dixie Lee Ray or a Chris Cox. It’s time the party realize that a principled message which appeals to all potential R voters and refuses to be politically correct (like President Trump) is the key to victory.
