Public confidence in the president’s handling of homeland security has been damaged by the testimony of former counterterrorism chief Richard Clarke to the 9/11 panel this week, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll.

Richard Clarke’s charge that George W. Bush largely ignored the Al Qaeda threat before the September 11 attacks has dealt a sharp blow to the president’s ratings on a crucial issue. According to the latest NEWSWEEK poll, the percentage of voters who say they approve of the way the president has handled terrorism and homeland security has slid to 57 percent, down from a high of 70 percent two months ago. The survey was conducted after Clarke, a former counterterrorism chief in both the Bush and Clinton administrations, testified to the 9/11 commission on Wednesday. Still, the president’s overall approval rating remains steady at 49 percent and Bush remains neck and neck with presumptive Democratic Party nominee Senator John Kerry.

And, in the same Newsweek poll, 65% of Americans believe that the Clinton administration didn't do enough to combat terrorism..

I believe the whole Richard Clarke/911 Commission thing is going to backfire big-time.

That would be true, except that the media is on the side of the Clarke/DNC/Kerry and won't report the lies, and in fact will continue to repeat them. This is very bad news, IMO, and proof that the President's bully pulpit is not enough to overcome the weight of the leftwing press.

The point is not to give up, but not to be a pollyanna either. Do you remember the heady days in 2000, with people only believing the POA poll, thinking there was going to be a landslide, and then what happened?

I wonder, if the POA poll showed a dead heat, how much more active people would have got, if they didn't think Bush was going to crush Gore.

No need to be Chicken Little, but while George Bush has the power of likeability, the incumbancy, the war chest, talk radio, there are some things Kerry has going in his favor. The liberal media, the 527's like Move-on, George Soros, etc.

My gut feeling is that this is going to be 2000 all over again. Neither candidate will get 300 electoral college votes. This race will be based on which base is more motivated, does the get out the vote, does the phone banks. Sobering news, put in perspective, can only make activists work that much harder.

I hear a similar radio report (perhaps quoting this Newsweek poll, etc.) here in DC -- the local news analyst on WTOP, Mark Plotkin. Looked up his bio online which includes the following highlights: "He was an advance man and congressional district coordinator for the 1972 campaigns of Edmund Muskie, Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern. He served as deputy finance director for Morris Udall in 1976 and for Ted Kennedy in 1980." Now I understand why he's so qualified and gets his "The Mark Plotkin Politics Program" every Friday night. Bias? Nah -- he's non-partisan! Just ask him!

This is what passes for balanced, non-partisan news in the mainstream media. This radio station should preface every comment this guy makes with this "bias" and "background" -- either that or have its FCC license lifted.

The President hasn't even begun to use the bully pulpit yet. When he does the landscape will change. We're still over 7 months from the election...there's going to be alot more crap coming our way. Don't let it get you down.

George W. Bush is an awesome campaigner...remember 2002? Once he gets in high gear and we have the canventions behind us, well, Katie bar the door. Don't ever misunderestimate George W. Bush, or you'll be sorry.
