If you're this sure they all hate us to the last man, why bother with waiting for protests to take place ? Shouldn't you advocate bombing residential areas, towns and cities and villages and even hamlets, whether there were signs of unrest or not ?

I'd much prefer treating people with justice - that is, mercilessly punishing everyone of the perpetrators, whoever they may be, and leaving alone the innocents, regardless of what they think of Westerners. If this really is some big "cultural" war between the democratic values of the West against the tyrannic values of Islam, then I'd rather have us living and fighting by our principles.

Interestingly, many of these are the same folks who once waxed enthusiastic about the Iraqis were "freedom loving" and "supported our troops." unfortunately this kind of "nuke 'em all" mentality was almost inevitable once we decided to get into this hopeless "nation building" war.

I was just mentioning yesterday to my partner at work as we watched the coverage of the "rioting in a near Fallujah" that those riots the other day just show how truly stupid the average Iraqi is ... 1500 U.S. Marines surrounding your city... is this a good time to riot? I'm no coward, but park one hummer on my street and tell me to stay in the house ... and I'm staying in for the night.

The Marines said they intended to take a softer approach with Fallujah residents, hoping to win popular support.

Agreed. If our operations result in increased recruitment for enemy forces then we'll lose the power to influence the course of events in Iraq. We must hold long enough to see a non-radical government in power, or all the blood and treasure we've poured into the area will have been wasted.

Thanks, Cap, even if I think most people say "Nuke them all to vent their rightful rage and their frustration.

Who wouldn't be enraged at the sight of cowards who only muster some courage when it comes to mutilating charred bodies ? I winced when I saw the pictures and quite frankly, my first thought was that since those people find it so funny to hack at dead bodies with shovels before hanging them, they should be given the chance to enjoy it themselves.

The US led the Coalition in Iraq as they led the Great Alliance in WW2 : they wanted to liberate a country from a bloody tyrant that was a serious menace to world order. And unlike post-WW2 Europe and Asia, where liberated people were grateful and even former enemies respectful, they have to suffer this, knowing that the next casualty could be their kid or mother or hubby. I know I'd sound much less reasonable if I had a friend or relative near Fallujah.

It's like a bloody nightmare, truly, but I have no doubt that the Coalition troops are up to the task, and that their leaders will show the necessary resolve and discipline.

I hear you, but even in a war you have a code of to respect, and that's no PC at all. A soldier is not supposed to loot, rape, or kill random civilians. He is someone you're supposed to look up at, even when you're the citizen of the country he's occupying. His strength comes not only from his training, but from his moral virtues.

US troops in WW2 did not wage a PC war. And yet they treated civilians well, they treated their prisoners with respect, and sometimes even protected collaborators from public lynching. When civilian targets were given to US and British bombing squadrons like in Dresden, there were many critics among the military and political leaders. I don't have the impression that code of conduct weakened their resolve, lowered their efficiency, or preventing them from defeating the standing (and sometimes outstanding) armies and navies from three industrialized major powers.
