NBC's Lisa Myers Reports

Kerry campaign says timing of 'Fortunate Son' ad campaign, 60 Minutes story a 'coincidence'

Having acknowledged that its own standards were violated, CBS News named an independent panel to investigate what went wrong: Former Republican Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and retired chief of the Associated Press Louis Boccardi.

The investigation focuses on the process that led to airing possibly fraudulent documents challenging the President's military service and why the CBS Producer put the source of those documents, longtime Bush critic Bill Burkett, in touch with the Kerry Campaign before the story aired.

Journalism expert Robert Steele says, "The producer in this case was already operating in an ethical minefield. She squirted gasoline on the explosives when she made that connection."

Republicans launched a frontal attack on CBS, accusing the network of "a serious lapse in judgment" beyond the initial report in not suspending producer Mary Mapes and apologizing only for the documents rather than retracting the story itself.

Republicans said the Kerry Campaign clearly knew something about the CBS Report before it aired.

Terry Holt of the Republican National Committee says, "We think they should come clean and answer the question, 'what information did you obtain and what did you intend to do with it?'"

The day before the CBS report, Democrats began a concerted attack on the President's National Guard record.

However, the Kerry Campaign insists it knew nothing about the CBS documents, claiming the timing was a coincidence.

Congressional Subpoenas! Start getting these Democratic idiots on legal record with at least the threat of perjury if they continue with the lies. Lying to Federal Investigators and/or congress is a crime. Not disclosing the information to Federal Investigators and/or congress is obstruction and a crime. Let the heads roll!

What Dan Rather and the Democrats did is against the 8th Commandment, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

They committed a mortal sin against George W. Bush.

It was too bad that JFK just happened to be in front of that assassin's bullet. And what about President Clinton's penis that, coincidently, found itself in the same space occupied by that young intern's oral cavity?

Life is filled with odd coincidences.

Former Republican Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and retired chief of the Associated Press Louis Boccardi.

Has anyone noticed what this says about the AP?

One would presume this is a “balanced and fair” committee. Since Thornberg is clearly the Republican, that makes Louis Boccardi the Democrat.

What does that say about the AP? The former head of the AP is so biased he’s picked as the Democratic counterweight to a former Republican Attorney General.

Doesn’t this just scream “AP is biased” to you?

It's going to take a lot of sugar to coat this coincidence. I expect shortages to arise in the stores soon.

I think the Kerry Campaign needs its own independent investigation. CBS is leading the way.

Wolfson's operation is well-oiled. His first day at the helm of OFS was Monday, September 6. On September 14, McAuliffe held a press conference and used the "Operation Fortunate Son" slogan for the first time. However, OFS was planned much earlier. Look back at the month before the operation began, and aspects of the Democrats' strategy come into focus, like the outline of a figure emerging from the mist.

On August 11, for example, Bob Tuke, the Tennessee state chair of Veterans for Kerry, told a Nashville radio station that, soon, "We may also know why Bush failed to show up for his medical exam that caused him to lose his flight status." A few weeks later, on September 1, liberal blogger Joshua Micah Marshall reported that Dan Rather was working on a 60 Minutes story about Bush and the Guard. On September 2, the day Bush accepted his party's nomination in New York, the online magazine Salon published an exhaustive investigation into the "unanswered questions" surrounding the president's service. On September 6, Terry McAuliffe issued a press release detailing "what we don't know" about Bush's Guard years. Another DNC release on the same topic followed on September 7. Three more followed on September 8, the day 60 Minutes aired its story featuring the now-discredited Guard memos. One of the DNC releases that day relied heavily on the 60 Minutes report.

Also on September 8, an independent group called Texans for Truth, whose founder has ties to the anti-Bush group MoveOn.org, announced it would run ads on Bush and the Guard in several swing states. A new batch of National Guard documents were released that day, too, and the Boston Globe and the Associated Press both featured stories on the new finds. The Globe story concluded that "Bush fell well short of meeting his military obligation." Then, on September 9, the DNC issued two more press releases that again quoted extensively from the 60 Minutes report, including from the discredited memos.

The DNC continued to issue press releases on Bush and the Guard, but, after September 9, the releases no longer mentioned the memos. The absence was noticeable.

If you look at the available evidence, the Kerry campaign is probably telling the truth. The fact that Burkett needed Mapes to get in contact with the Kerry campaign certainly suggests that they were holding him at arms length (remember that he had written that he couldn't penetrate the layers of kids when he tried to contact the campaign himself).

I think CBS bought hook-line-and-sinker what the Kerry campaign itself wouldn't touch.

It was just another strange case of Mental Telepathy. Kind of like the time President Nixon sent John Kerry to Cambodia on Christmas Eve 1968. Nixon was signaling him even before he became President. MT is powerful stuff.

But the timing of the Sandy Berger investigation was a deliberate White House plot.....riiiiight.....

CBS report: Sept. 8 evening
Kerry fortunate son ad: Sept. 9 day

so less than 24 hours...and I can guarantee you it takes far longer to produce an ad and distribute it.
