A Paris court has ruled that an acclaimed new film by the director of Amelie is not French enough to vie for French prizes. Jean-Pierre Jeunet's A Very Long Engagement, a French story filmed in French, has drawn rave reviews.
But a court judged it was too American to compete in French film festivals, including Cannes.

Not French enough means actually watchable for more than, say, a few microseconds.
France is staunchly protective of its cinema and goes to great lengths to avoid the influence of Hollywood.
Which is why the French made films enjoy such worldwide box office success.

The french are laughably silly. I once tried to buy a french-made computer hardware product for a research study here in the US. The company rejected our purchase order because it did not use the proper language for the delivery address. When we tried to change the PO to their liking, they refused to sell to us because it wasn't done correctly the first time. It gave me such pleasure to get their sales director on the phone and tell him what a total idiot he was and how I would enjoy changing the study requirements to not allow any future purchase of their inferior french products.
