God's Democrat is Zell Miller, playing the role of Lot.
The kind that over looks the 10 Commandments because they're politically incorrect.
How dare God tell them they shouldn't covet they neighbors pay checks!
At least the guy has the decency to be pro-life. That leads me to believe he's genuine in his beliefs. There is something consistent, if wrongheaded, about the pacifist-socialist worldview as long as it's accompanied by a belief in protecting the unborn. The height of hypocrisy is to preach compassion for "the least of these" while allowing babies to be murdered in the womb. I'm glad Wallis doesn't succumb to that.
Hes not pro-life.
People just get sillier and sillier.
I live in the Memphis area, and this idiot has no clue about the mentality of Memphis Black religious people.
"The Weekly Standard will do well if it doesn't paint the progressive evangelical movement as all the liberals who are religious"
Is that some kind of a threat?
Did the article get that wrong? Or what's the deal?
Thanks for posing this article. The chance is that a genuine pacifist-socialist-green platform combined with a consistent opposition to abortion, gay marriage, porn etc constitutes what many East Asian and minority evangelical Christians in the US consider as the "conservative Christian" position. They believe "political conservatism on economics and WOT is theological liberalism/apostasy". I had been there before and I grew up with this particular teaching.
Ping to dsc, okie, Quix, and others for reference and comments!
Another question: one one has asked his opinions on socially liberal and atheist leftists who are 3 out of 3 left-leaning on social/moral, foreign/defence, and economics/social welfare issues.
What does he think of the likes of ACLU, Hollywoord producers and directors, or indeed any one of the Beltway and Northeast liberal establishment who declare "religions is for the weak", such as Ted Turner?
ping
More than anything, Wallis strikes me as a left-wing eccentric -- a sixties hippie who took his spirituality too seriously. I don't know whether being pro-life qualifies as eccentric or apostate on the left, though.
Philosophically, wouldn't he belong in the garden variety European school of Christian Socialism? The socialism, pacifism and anti-Americanism are all of a piece with this.
I don't know for sure - because over in Europe (Britain included) there had never been a major tenant of Christianity-derived belief that combines pacifism and moral conservatism. They were supportive of "just wars" as waged from their national perspectives in the pre-WWII times, while it is true that their successors after the war became pacifist, they have also altogether become lax regarding morals like gay rights as well.
There is a major belief among "pro-life, pro-moral pacifist Christians" that Bush is the Antichrist - of course they must ignore passages in the Bible saying everyone will like and worship the eventual world dictator except Christians. When you know many self-declared atheists hate him, well, Bush fails this criteria.
BTW, I would be interested to know what his response to the full blown socially liberal atheists like Ted Turner would be like. Will Wallis declare to Turnr that God is real, and not "just for the weak" as Turner had famously remarked? What will Turner or people like the NYT journalists regard someone who agrees with them on most issues, but believe in God, and speaks out against abortions, porn, euthansia, and gay rights?
And speaking about Euroepan liberalism, there are two threads on British leftism that has attracted quite an America-bashing response from a self-delcared British Conservative here (who is a newbie on FR). Have a look at them and let me know what you think (his screen name is cooper72):

"All democrats are going to hell..."- Pope Pipeus I..
That's why I raise the question of "eccentric" vs "apostate".
I'll save the cooper72 threads until morning, if you don't mind. It's 1:40 AM in Texas...well past my bedtime (Rangers 3, Angels 2 in extra innings, on the coast). Thanks for the alert.
Best.
So-called "social justice" is Satan's way of turning empathy to evil purposes.
If it's defined as "justice," it can be enforced. If it's enforced it's not voluntary. And if it ain't voluntary, it don't count, bunky.
Leftist whackos like this one think God wants them to put a gun to people's heads and force them to feed the needy. Or, at least, they pretend to think that. Frankly, I doubt the honesty of any leftist who claims to be a Christian.
'rats are going to try to wedge at least some of the Evangs' away from the Republicans but this guy ain't the one to do it.
Wallis is pro-life like John Kerry is pro-life. He and his wife would never seek an abortion, but for anybody else, abortion on demand. At least thats what Ive gleaned from a very long interview of him I saw. Hes extremely evasive and never said those words but between the lines his position was very clear.
