WASHINGTON (Reuters) - First lady Laura Bush said on Tuesday that young people are more likely to get jobs if they avoid tattoos, as well as drugs and alcohol.
"We know that people who do avoid drugs and alcohol are more likely to be able to get a job," she said in an interview with American Urban Radio Network.
"We want young people to avoid gangs. And we know that if they're not tattooed with gang tattoos, they're more likely to be employable," Bush said.
Bush has been active in youth issues and promotes helping young people overcome disadvantaged environments to get an education and jobs.
"Well, if you're tattooed on your face or your arms ... where people can see it ... most employers probably would not hire you," Bush said, according to a transcript released by the White House.
She cited a program in Los Angeles aimed at stopping gang violence, Homeboy Industries, where she met young people who had dealt drugs, been in prison, were tattooed on their foreheads and on their necks, and trying to turn their lives around.
Father Gregory Boyle who runs the program has two laser machines and doctors give their time without charge to remove tattoos, she said in another interview with USA Radio Network.
"So that after people have worked at Homeboy Industries they can go out and find a job with a silk-screening business, with a graphic business, with restaurants, with bakeries," Bush said.
You know it! :-)
Being tattooed or pierced does not necessarily imply that anyone is trying to push any boundary at work. That said, if the person removes the piercing(s) and can cover the tattoos with clothes at work, where is the problem?
The one with the biggest ti....
Oh, that's a different question.
Man you really have it in for the Mexicans eh?
that's a guy?!?!
I've often wondered just how many visibly tattoo'd/pierced employees Mr. Lewis of Progressive Insurance has hired, or Soros, or any of the other big-buck Lib/Dem donors.
mr. soros hires plenty, they are responsible for escorting cindy sheehan all over the country.
Not just gang tatoos. Here in the midwest, at least, jailbirds just love to get the crude india ink tatoos, especially on their hands, knuckles and forearms. These are not the colorful tatoos you are used to seeing but the crude, faded, blue tatoos. They are often just initials or a cross or something. Any employer knows that tatoos like this are a sure sign that the person you are dealing with has done some time.
You're sure it's a guy?
I have a hard time not laughing at men wearing ear rings. The people who have those little doodads in their tongues just crack me up, no matter what. What's next a bone in their nose or bells on their toes?
Wow! Whatever we're paying her, she's worth every penny!
As an employer of young people, I never would have thought to consider the correlation. Thanks, Laura! Great job picking the USSC nominee, too.
With enough hard work, all this insanity will be cast out and everything will be the way it is supposed to be.
Apparently, hoever, you are not smart enough to know that her comments were directed to young people, not their prospective employers.
Lumbergh (to the Initech employee who rebeled against Hawaiian shirt Fridays): "U'mmmm yeah, we've got a little bit of a problem here. I'm going to have to go ahead and ask you to leave the building and not return again. So if you could just do that , that would be great. Mmmmkay. THANKS!."
He's just the guy we're looking for to head up the Human Resources department.
"I'm sorry, what was that you said"?
these people are so ugly they will scare the Hell outta the Devil when they get there.....
